OK so y'all know the feature some games have where you can scan a monster in battle and some know-it-all tells you its details?

I'd like to implement that, and (if it's possible) have the option to supplement it with some dialog between characters after the scan.

Is this a thing in Ace? Any good scripts for it? How much pain am I setting myself up for?
Well, without scripts you could use battle events and switches with dialogue to do such a thing. You could even have pictures show up with enemy details. A lot of enemy stats can be accessed via variables, and they can be shown in message windows, too - that's how scan was created in 2k/3 games. It might be worth it to check out some of those old tutorials (which I assume we have at least one or two of on site).

That said, I believe Yanfly has a good script that lets you recheck information after you scan the enemy any time in battle.

Any suggestion how I might search for them? I don't know the terminology too well.

This thingy is probably what they are talking about. Visiting Nessy's github link here should get you the code.

*Edit: The accompanying dialog idea could be done with a function-call when the player cancels out of the scan-window (Scene_Battle.hide_comparison_windows, probably). Like, I'm envisioning a dialog that's a textbox, maybe a face-set. That could all be one instance of Window_Base. If you're looking for something more like the text box (with speaker indicator) in this image, that's two separate instances.
