SO... FINAL FANTASY XVI ANYONE?

What's everyone's opinion about the game so far?

The game was revealed a while ago and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. Initially I was a little bit disappointed with the medieval approach, because I've grown to really like the more out-there-pseudo-futuristic worlds later Final Fantasies are known for and I was looking forward to seeing what Square came up with next. Then when the game looked a lot like many other darker fantasy titles from past 6 years or so, I was a bit bummed.

I knew I was going to like the game regardless though, because there has yet to be a mainline entry I didn't like. Since the reveal, the game has been in the back of my head and it has really grown on me. My disappointment has definitely turned into hype.
I still have to finish FF7 thru FF15 first.
Think the story might be cool considering the creators are heavily influenced by Vagrant Story and similar Ivalice properties (also the Last Remnant guy is working on it). But first impressions of the world/character designs feel pretty shallow. This is coming from someone who appreciates a lot of stuff done in FF14 but I guess it hits different when it's a singleplayer RPG. FF12 just destroys both in terms of world design by a mile. Idk my outlook is just pretty "meh"

People will either like it or they won't. I haven't played FFXV because of money. People hated FFXIII but I liked it.

Meanwhile, here's Kentona, who has just admitted to never playing anything past VI but in most threads asking people which is their favorite FF will explain to anyone who has the audacity to say that VII is their favorite one why they are objectively wrong.

So, I've come to realize that trying to predict a game based on an early reveal is pretty pointless. Maybe a few more trailers later, it there will be something to talk about.

The very medieval FFIX is a lot of people's favorite Final Fantasy, as is the very medieval FFV. All I can say about this one being medieval is that it's unreasonable to expect every Final Fantasy to be mind-twisty-sci-fi, and maybe that's a failing since just about every FF since X has been fairly on the mind-twisty-sci-fi side, especially since now there are adults for whom games like FFIX would have been a bit before they were old enough to really take interest in or would have come to understand the series.
Hey now! In highschool I borrowed my friends PS1 and he borrowed my N64 for a couple of weeks, and I played FF7 up until the point I got that girl in the short-shorts with a sharpened tire-iron weapon!

I just never came back to it and finished it.

I hear that Aeris dies??
XDDD

I'm hoping that if they go the route of only having one playable character, they do something akin to Witcher 3. The world looks to be more gritty and grimdark so it's a good game to riff a bit off when it comes to battles and the planning there-of.

I wonder how long this game is going to take them to make? I remember when FF15 went under the title Final Fantasy Versus 13. That's how delayed it was. Also, how long did they tease people with an FF7 remake before it actually happened? Even then, only a portion of the game is released. There's more episodes to come. I'm kinda more interested in what they are going to do there than FF16, to be perfectly honest. Even if I've not touched the remake yet. It might be one of those things that I sit on until there is a version of the game that includes all the episodes on... I dunno, PS6 at that point, maybe?

As for FF16 being on PS5, I dunno. I wasn't really planning on getting a PS5, and the announcement that FF16 is on it doesn't really move me?
I never had or played a PS4 but I hear that the PS5 is backwards compatible, so I was considering it... but it is really expensive, and we couldn't come up with a list of games that would make a PS5 worth it, even with the PS4 library.

PS4 is worth it. It has some great games on it. PS5 will be worth it but people need to be patient. Nobody wants to make games for a system that doesn't exist yet. I can't think of any system that ever launched with a huge library out of the gate. I always wait until the consoles drop in price a bit anyway.
There's a decent amount of PS4 games that make getting PS5 worth it (and you apparently get a bunch for free when you get a PS5, so that's pretty cool. One of which is Persona 5 (not the Royal version, but hell, the base game took me over 100 hours anyway, and it's a very good jRPG, so that's a thing!)).

I'm kinda sad that I boosted for a PS4 Pro this year and didn't hold out for a PS5 but knowing me I wouldn't have had the cash for the 5 by the time it comes out anyway. the 4 was a very lucky set of coincidences coming together. That said, I'll aim to get a 5 eventually, but it probably won't be new.

I might end up saving for a new PC and just get the PC version of 16 when it drops, though.
Yeah considering I don't even own a television, I most likely won't be getting a PS5 anytime soon either. New console games are becoming more and more available on PC too, so that might be just as good way to go about playing these games.

PS4 is worth it because of Bloodborne alone imo, but I guess that's just my personal bias. There are great jRPGs around too. Persona 5 felt like it perfected the turn-based battle system imo. Dragon Quest XI was very solid traditional jRPG and I've just recently gained a new love for Yakuza games after dismissing them since playing the first one on PS2 ages ago. Despite them looking like simple brawlers, they are very much jRPGs at their core and this is only made more clear with the upcoming sequel that has turn-based combat system too.

On topic, I heard FF16 will be M-rated, which is absolutely crazy. I didn't think the mainline series would ever go there. The trailer does give a darker look sure, but still a surprise. Also the director of the game is a huge Matsuno fanboy, so Ivalice vibes are probably going to be there.
How I felt after I saw the debut trailer:

Not really digging it. I've tried to enjoy the new "action" battle systems of the more recent games, but I just can't really get into them and enjoy them, so this one's probably going to be a hard pass from me though I'll reserve final judgment until there's some solid gameplay videos out. I also find it really jarring how the cutscenes seem to be realistic/serious and inspired by Game of Thrones or something, but then it cuts to a fight and it's hilariously anime-like with the exaggerated attacks, juggling enemies mid-air, and so forth. Just from the trailer, I get the impression that the game has no idea what it's trying to be from a tonal perspective.

On a positive note, I'm glad that it appears to be a full-on fantasy setting again for the first time in years. Final Fantasy is at its best when it fully embraces fantasy.

Yeah, they were saying something similar on USGAMER when the trailer dropped. On first glance, if you squint really hard, it looks like a throwback to the ideas they were playing around with in Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics - I liked how Joshua turned into Ifrit; it's sort of like how the Lucavi possess human vessels through the zodiac stones in Tactics. The Lucavi were these severely underrated horror movie monsters characters - they manipulate the church and history books, all so they can sacrifice enough blood to revive their leader, the High Seraph Altima.

The Lucavi's transformations into their monster forms, were always so god dang cool, because it took what was familiar and twisted it into this dark tone for Final Fantasy, that's rarely been seen in the series since: The Esper-like-characters that are normally celebrated in the series, become misleading and terrifying; they're actually the bad guys of the story.

I don't care for the combat in the trailer, but I haven't played anything more recent than 12, so maybe the series is going in a different direction now. But it'd be cool if they could throw in a Mustadio Bunansa character so you can snipe Tonberry's from the roof or something. Final Fantasy has always been about strategy, but also stories. They could always tell better stories.

I wish they'd tell better stories...

My initial thought with FF15, is this game is super fun, but I hate the story, characters and world. When I came up against classic FF monsters, like Catoblepas and Iron Giant... All I could think is: I wish they would remake FF1 in this engine. And lo'! Final Fantasy 16, at your service! Yahtzee!

I really liked FF15 in the first area, and how it felt like I could go anywhere, and do anything. How an open-world RPG probably should make you feel. However, after leaving that first area it just felt incredibly on-rails. Not that I necessarily mind being on-rails at times, but, for that game, it just felt super awkward?
