PIKMIN

I suppose I'll start with shameless plug by admitting that I've started a Let's Play for Pikmin.

I'll admit Day 01 probably isn't the best episode simply because I exploited the infinite nature of the first day to let some of my red Pikmin flower in order to get an edge on my enemies for Day 02.

Overall, I'd say I've been doing an okay job at the game seeing as how I'm on day 14 and already have 17 parts to my name. On the other hand, I kind of wish I had used my time a bit better in certain sections of the game. And it's probably going to be a pain in the %$# to get the final part in the first area you unlock at this point since I haven't visited that place in days. So I'm guessing all of the old wildlife has returned with a vengeance by now.

As for the game itself. I'm not entirely sure what I want to feel about it. On one hand, it's a nice break from my usual content which helps the game feel a bit refreshing in ways. On the other hand, the AI for the Pikmin when it comes to following Olmar is a bit iffy at times. This has resulted in me losing a couple of red Pikmin in the past. Especially when I tried getting the part from those weird worm/bird hybrids in the second area. At the same time I never actually managed to finish this game as a kid. I'd usually lose interest around the point I'm currently at.

Outside of trying to shamelessly plug my own content I was also curious what other people thought about this game in particular or the franchise as a whole.
Beat Pikmin 1 but only briefly played the other 2. In my opinion 1 has the best premise/overlying system with the ship parts in day limit thing. You can be pretty slow and probably get the good ending easily, but what I like about how it works that isn't necessarily about beating the clock but rather the order in which you do them in.

How fast you do the tasks is speed based but the actual task planning is the fun part. Sorta like figuring out how to complete Resident Evil with the least amount of trips/backtracking rather than the raw timing. I had the most fun just beating my own personal record bring the days a little bit more down even though it's not needed. Pikmin 2 does away with that and just replaces it with a currency kinda gimmick and that was a shame, though I understand the day system can be quite limiting with what you can do with the whole RTS-lite genre I didn't even bother to mention.

Pikmin 3 returned to this along with the multiple characters and the hunger stuff but I haven't really actually sat down to play it in order to compare it to the original. Though I think I enjoy just how restrained and simple the original is, the captains log parts are a very nice break from the day to day and idk there's something very comfy about the premise of being alone on a planet discovering these new alien creatures that you're forced to work with. The sequels kind of just add more characters and we already know about the Pikmin planet by now that it's not as mysterious the more we return to the concept. I think it also helps that it was an early gamecube title, so there's kind of this rawness to how the game is made that it doesn't feel too overdesigned or overthought.
I'll admit I haven't been the best on the planning front so far. After all, I tend to only use one type of Pikmin at a time which results in me needing to waste time on backtracking to my ship in a lot of situations. Admittedly this hasn't hampered me too much so far, but I imagine that will change once I get to the 2nd to last area.

And I've been told the final area takes around two days to complete.
