[DISCOVERY] WAS RPG95 ABOUT TO GET AN INTERNATIONAL RELEASE?

I recently discovered a pre-release build of RPGツクール95 made in 1996 (final release was 1997年03月28日) which is called "RPGックール for Windows95" (talking about program names... there's more, just read on). It was made for some kind of presentations I think.

Most functions are not finished or are missing completely (e.g. the program file doesn't include any UI for setting up event commands), saving the project and some other things are greyed out and it features an automatic demonstration with a fairly huge amount of text explaining what's going on and what the product "will" be about.

The crazy thing about this is: The text is written almost completely in english and the first textbox reveals that "RPG MAKER" was at least considered even back then to be the official english name for the RPG TKool series.

It even features a few short (original?) WAV music tracks that I never encountered in any RPG Maker RTP or game.

★ This preview version of RPG95 was officially made available to the public at least once, but - obviously - I won't reupload it.



But the big question that now remains is... was the final program considered to be released internationally? I don't know, but what do you think? Drop your guesses below. °ヮ°
Very interesting. I only know of the detailed history of Kanji-Hack early translation days and them getting a cease and desist (the only time before Final Fantasy 0 did it ever happen for a translation project) and getting scared to just let Don Miguel do it. This all very well happened in April 1999 with October 1999 being back when KanjiHack announced they were doing an unofficial translation. Which reminds me, I need to finish that mega-article...

If the theory holds true it is weird that they've considered for so long until 2004. Then again it's probably due to budget constraints and constant company acquisitions that RPG Maker had a hard time exiting Japan.

Didn't we get an outside-Japan release? I distinctly remember playing around with it pre-internet. I used it on a friend's computer, and he had gotten it from another friend via CD (or fifty million 3.5" floppies, as was normal in the 90s).

The tiles sets look nice, but that background and dragon look terrible.
Pretty sure that background and dragon aren't part of the RTP.

Not an official release. There was a very popular unofficial translation by Don Miguel who also translated RPG Maker 2000 (long before it was officially released).

Nope, just checked to be sure and they are certainly not. It'd be cool if those pre-release resources were out there somewhere, just for curiosity's sake. I like the bad 90s CG style.
The characters in the second to last screenshot aren't the classic RM95 style either. I wonder if as part of a release they were redoing assets that would appeal more to "Western" design. Gaudy CG and more human proportions?

One weird bit is why is JEFF's MP 000/000? All those leading zeros makes it feel a bit like a mockup, but then why do a mockup when you have the engine? Or maybe it's 1000/1000 MP that just got cut off.


It's always neat to see the RPG Maker I started with. Maybe this might've happened, or it was proposed but shot down. I'd guess all the disabled commands was to prevent a leak having a fully functional version of the game. Still a neat page of RPG Maker history though!
Sorry, about a year late on this, but I was one of the members of Kanjihack back then.
We did translations for RPG Maker 95, and 2000 before we got the cease-and-desist letter from ASCII. Before we had gotten that Don Miguel was already doing his own translation of 2000, then shortly afterwards went back and finished off our translation of 95.
Even after the cease-and-desist letter I still continued to run the RPG Maker community for a while after. We just did not do any more translations.

I can also say those screenshots look very foreign to me, and do not look like what I remember of the 95 software. I also do think that back then ASCII DID want to bring it an english translation hence why they pursued us, as our members resided in US and UK whereas Don Miguel resided in Russia and was able to get away with it.
