[RMMZ] WHAT DO I DO ABOUT UNDERSCORES IN FILE EXTENSIONS?

I recently downloaded an MZ game and made a peculiar discovery: the files for a significant chunk of the assets (everything in the "audio" and "img" folders) had an underscore ("_") at the end of their extensions (e.g. ".png_" and ".ogg_").
Has anyone else seen this? Is this a bug or some kind of new, strange feature? Is there a way to get them back to their more conventional extensions without rendering them unusable?

People encrypt their games for many reasons.
I can't think of many good reasons to mess with someone's encrypted game files.
