[RMXP] [RMMV] A NEWCOMER APPROACHES... WITH A QUESTION!

Hello everyone. Hope you are well.

I have just made this account to have a look at different development tips and the likes but I also have a pretty urgent question I need to resolve.

So right now, on Steam, there is a sale going on for all of the different versions of rm and I just snatched XP for about £2, and I love it to death, it's so much fun to play with. I do have the goal however to possibly make a full game with this software. However, I have also seen on Steam the MV version for a pretty good price and was wondering if it was worth my money, or if I should just stick with XP.

Also worth mentioning is I dont have the best hardware in the world, below are my specs:

Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz
16 GB of DDR3 RAM
Windows 10 Pro
Nvidia 9600 GT 1GB GPU

TL;DR - What are the notable differences between XP and MV, and do they make one version better than the other?

My current laptop's stat-block is...

Intel Core i5 @ 2.2 GHz
8 GB RAM
Windows 8.1
NVIDIA GeForce 940M 2GB GPU

...as thus. I can run RPG Maker MZ, the latest in the RPG Maker line of software, without too much effort? I haven't tried anything really crazy/heavy with MZ, personally, but, I've certainly played games where my system lags to hell and back. Putting my power settings to high performance clears it up.

As for the differences, I'm not sure if I'm really qualified to answer that? I never used MV, and while I did use XP, it wasn't for long, and was some time ago. For what it's worth, the main difference is that MV is capable of deploying a playable version of games to mobile devices, as well as PCs, out of the box, whereas XP would only be capable of deploying to PC.
Unfortunately I am not in place to speak about performance, as my PC sucks big time but even then I hadn't been playing and experiencing too much.

When talking about the differences between different engines, the biggest pet peeve for me is: the latest engine will ALWAYS have so much more support.

If you happen to struggle too much with systems, scripts and whatnot, you will see that the older the engine, the scarcer the support. Say not, XP has been around for... *counts up fingers* almost 18 years already! If I'm not mistaken. By this time, a LOT of forums, of codes (looking at you Dropbox, although I'm not sure ppl used it that much at XP golden age, but still looking at you) have unfortunately vanished to nothingness.
So, if you want to go forward with it, be aware of this. This is not to say that there's no one still in RMXP; there's always someone (even in VX!) and this community for example is filled to the brim with 2000/3 users. I guess.

What I would recommend you is: take a look at both engines, download the MV trial, see what you have in mind, compare their capabilities, what is available, and see what is best for you.

I mainly say this because, even though I do own MV, I'm a VXA user and sometimes it is very clear to me the weight of using an older engine.

Yeah, support for me is pretty important due to how I am still pretty new. That being said, MZ was a bit too expensive given how recent it is, so I think MV is probably the best middle ground if I choose to move on.

I'm about to give the trial of MV a shot, which I actually did not know existed because the trial is not on steam for some reason.

Thanks for your input!

I appreciate you sharing your specs. I have an inkling that MV may be slightly too demanding for my setup, although I'll never really know until I try. Ultimately, I think it would be a shame to go so far with an XP project only to hit a roadblock due to the age of the program and how little was possible back then compared to now (not to knock XP, it's a super nifty tool that I could still jam with now so many years later). Thanks.
So after trying out the trial for MV, I decided to put my eggs into one basket and buy the full thing. Having a great time with it as I did XP. Can't wait to play around with it some more.
Glad to hear it! Trials are for that, after all.
