OLD BROWSER GAMES

I suppose it's time to once again honor the fallen by talking about old browser games like Dark Throne Beta where you could spend several minutes a day clicking on recruitment links in order to gain more citizens for your own empire in exchange and team up with other players in order to wage war on other groups of players.

Though since the game never actually forced players to go through manual resets I spent most of my time camping at the lower levels and basically building up a near impenetrable defense. At least as close as you could get to that for someone at level 31. I did eventually start to level up a bit near the end of the game in order to boost my overall rank when it became clear the site was going to close soon. I actually managed to get in the top 500 or so, but that really didn't matter that much considering most of the player base had left a long time ago. Even a lot of the top players had left near the end since there really wasn't much of a reason to stick around at that point.

I suppose a more popular example might be Oil Empires which the fans actually tried to resurrect on their own, but their efforts never really went anywhere to my knowledge. You'd basically build up an empire on acquiring and refining oil. You'd then use the money you got from selling oil to either expand your economic potential by drilling for more oil or building things like stadiums. Of course you could also use your funds to develop military buildings and units in order to defend your own buildings or send them out to attack other players in order to acquire more resources.

The game also reset every couple of months or so in order to rework the balance of the various military units as well as set all of the players on the same footing again. I kind of lost interest in the game after a couple of resets since I didn't like seeing my efforts to build up my economy getting wiped out on a regular basis.

I have played a few others over the years like ogame, but that one is still around. And I need to get going to bed soon. So I don't have enough time to see if some of the others are still around. I remember playing a round or two in a game where you could work your way through various ages as you upgraded your technology. So basically a browser version of Age of Empires.

And I used to be a member on Gotenks_Pad a browser game where you needed to send your actions to the site owner since everything needed to be manually updated. I actual ran a similar site for a while called jings_all_out_anime_rpg but your basically only going to find them through oocities now a days. And I'm not entirely sure you can even find gotenks_pad through that. At least my efforts didn't turn up anything useful.
