[RMXP] WHAT'S THE ETIQUETTE FOR USING CUSTOM SCRIPTS IN GAMES YOU WISH TO SELL?

Hello, I've been using RPG Maker for years but have never attempted to sell one of my games. In fact, when I started out I didn't even realize people could sell games they made in RPGMaker. Not sure when I realized you could but anyway, from 2008 to 2014 I amassed a number of free custom graphics and scripts that I found in random websites which were made solely for RPG Maker XP. I was wondering what the code of conduct was for using this stuff in a game I wish to sell. Would I have to track down the people who made these things and ask for permission to use this stuff in a commercial game and pay them for the rights to use said stuff or do people who make free custom stuff for RPG Maker games generally allow creators to use their stuff even in commercial games?
It depends on the resource, and the rights. Some creators provide resources for free to use in commercial and non-commercial games, others are strictly non-commercial, some require a paid license to use them in commercial games, and some have specific requirements depending on the type of project. You'd have to track down the source and find out the rights for each resource,

Make sure you're allowed to use them as such (they usually will say in the script instructions) and credit them. If they have special requirements for using scripts commercially, then follow those special requirements.
Ah that's a good point I'll look through the Script's instructions at some point.
The scripts are the most important since I can always make new graphics but scripting is not something I'm great at. I've done a bit of custom scripting but not much.
If they do not allow usage in commercial projects or require that you purchase a license, don't quibble. If you expect to make money off the project, they deserve their cut, even if it's just the $20 they ask for people to use them.

To save yourself a headache, If you're planning on making a project that may potentially go commercial, get into the practice of not using any scripts or resources that disallow commercial use, even for free games. Because even you project starts off as free you might one day decide to make an extended commercial version of it. The fewer scripts you have to replace in that transition the better.

I also see you're looking at RPG Maker XP specifically, to which I assume you might be dealing with some -very- old scripts. I would also try to avoid using scripts that might say something like "Contact me for permission for commercial use" if you're unable to track down the original author. Case in point: I had to replace a damage popup script from Brave Hero Yuusha with a different one for Brave Hero Yuusha EX because the script was so old that the author was no longer reachable.

You should also vet, choose, and implement the scripts you need as early in development as possible. This way, you're not scrambling to find a suitable replacement for something later in development because it turned out you weren't allowed to use it.
