LIMITATIONS

What are some challenges to face when designing that you feel leave you stuck or limited to something?

Go!
My limitation is that I only have so many talents.
I would have to definitely say mapping.

Story and Dialogue. I'm a number cruncher - I can do mechanics with my eyes in jar on my desk next to me. But my stories are always mediocre - not bad or good - mediocre. I'd say that's even worse.

Whose aren't?

Basically all of limitations pretty much come down to my short attention span.
Though I am a semi-competent artist(maybe), I have no practice in spriting. I should probably do more of that. I also have no real skills in music or programming, though I've never had an interest in doinger the former.

Most (that have seen my work) seem to think I am a highly competent writer/designer, and I can make my own character art. For whatever any of that is worth. =)

I don't know if you're ENGLISH MAJOR quality, karsu, but you put enough effort into your dialogue so that it isn't like "oh hey there dead guy" "lol I'm dead" "OH WOW SPIRIT" "Can I join party?"

I am probably a poor technical writer. That's why I edit a lot.
I only use RTPs since I just started RPG making a month ago. I think my mapping kinda sucks, especially with XP(I can't even make a goddamn ship for crying out loud!). I'm also very bad with making quests.

I hate doing doing cutscenes. I should just games with zero dialogue... just hack n slash. And hot chicks.
I'm a procrastonator to the max!

I just can't ever motivate myself to start a game. This happens with school and what not as well (doing homework, etc).

Cutscenes are a real pain in the ass ... especially when you have to watch them over and over to see if everything is going as planned ...

Not really, considering that it's REALLY worth it to take that time.

My limitations. Does perfectionism count? I pay too much attention to some insignificant things and thus makes my process much much slower.

My strengths would be my imagination and plot scripts, but I hope I could write better english, and express my writing in richer ways.

I'm also sometimes very lazy to work those parts that feel uncomfortable for me.

No, but I'm talking about extremely long cutscenes that have "Move event" commands and "Pan Screen" / "Screentone" / "Wait xxx frames" and many more. You must watch these scenes over and over to get them perfect.

It's worth it yeah, but after the 20th time It's such a drag...

That's all part of being a successful game designer.

:-\ I guess your right.

Anyhow, my limitation would have to be mapping ... I'm a really good programmer and can code with my eyes close, but when it comes to mapping ... man, oh man.
Actually . . .

When making an amateur game, you are well-advised to take note of your limitations and maybe design your game around them. You shouldn't throw yourself against the wall trying to remake Final Fantasy games or, more appropriately, The Way. Think about what you do good in game making and build your game to revolve around that. If you aren't good at something and you aren't learning and it isn't catching on, just axe that feature from your game. You will have more fun making it and (this next part is important) you might even make a good game that people play to completion!
I have a bit of confidence in my writing ability, think I'm merely 'OK' with design (Hopeless with numbers, but I can at least come up with different ideas and make them happen), and quite bad at mapping and pixel art. Motivation is probably what limits me the most =P
