[RMMZ] SKILLS FOR UNARMED COMBAT

So, I'm a new game designer, and I'd like my main character to have three weapon types: axe, bow, and unarmed. I understand that I can go down to "Required Weapon" to make Axe skills usable only if they have an axe weapon equipped, or bow skills usable if they have a bow equipped. My question is if it's possible to make skills only available if no weapons are equipped.

The cleanest solution I can think of that would not involve scripting is to modify the weapon skills so that they have separate categories (if they don't already), and to attach the appropriate skills, and skill category, to the weapons, themselves through features. The unarmed skills would have their own category, and be a feature attached to the actors/classes. The unarmed skills would either be learned/acquired on level-up, or during gameplay through events. At which point, the unarmed category would be sealed if a weapon is equipped.

While not made in MZ, I've a few games in Ace that attach skills, and skill categories via weapons, rather than via a class. If you could look at their databases, that might give a clearer picture of what I'm talking about than mere text. They would be this one and this one.
