[RMXP] [RMMZ] [RM2K3] WHAT'S BETTER FOR MAKING AN NES STYLE RPG

Is RPG Maker 2003 or RPG Maker MZ better for making an NES style 8 bit looking RPG with side battles? I currently have RPG Maker XP and MZ. I noticed a sale for 2003. I'm most accustom to XP which doesn't normally have side battles though I'm sure there is a script for it. But, I'm thinking of making a game for sale this time and I'm not sure if it's a good idea to use outside scripts for a purchasable game. I've had an idea for an old fashion FF1 kinda game and was wondering if I should get 2003 for that. Also do modern computers have any compatibility problems with 2003? I've barely had time to practice using MZ though I heard all the magic is particle based or something like that which is not very NES like. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.
2k3, the resolution is at least close enough though it may not meet the exact aspect ratio. Many nes likes have been made in it though, like Paradise Blue or Dragon Fantasy. The other rpgmakers have too hd resolution to even bother with. There are workarounds but requires some understanding of upscaling resolution that I see few people do correctly (fonts especially).

2k3 has decent compatibility especially with easyRPG which is just an exe replacement though the official exe uses an opengl wrapper and its fine.
Thanks for the tips.
I went ahead and bought 2k3 just in case I decide to use it instead of MZ.
That said I do think I know how to upscale pixels correctly if I need to.
As for fonts though yeah that may be an issue for me.
I have similar aspirations with a Super NES-based game (which uses the same resolution as the NES, most of the time). I managed to convert VX Ace's text engine into displaying fonts from a custom image file instead of a True Type/vector font, and it was not easy. The modern RPG Makers offer better support for customized things, but, you might have to go whole-hog and do most things from scratch in order to keep organized. If you can't code in Ruby, it will be a problem. MZ uses Javascript, so I don't even know how complicated that one is.

RPG Maker 2003 is the closest you can get. Its only problem is lack of modern computer support for the unofficial version (the official version is better, anyway) and some difficulty in piecing together customized systems. I managed to make my own text engine in the unofficial version; it would be even easier with the official version, the way you can use 999 pictures and maintain them with variables alone there. That's not even getting into the special things you can do with DynRPG and the Maniacs patch. (Although, DynRPG requires some knowledge of C++ code.)
