So Demon Tower is getting something of an overhaul, and the main additions are a town and Feats. These two aspects are intertwined because Feats are a renewable resource--something like party-wide Skill Points/Mana/whatever--that can be renewed at inns. Basically, Feats allow you to interact with the environment to either get new items or open up new areas.

The four different places to rest all fully recover your health. They also determine how long you can fight before you are tired, the amount of Feats you can perform, whether or not you can get robbed, and whether or not you find a complimentary gift. When you are tired, your stats (including max HP) are decreased by 30%.

Rated from cheapest to most expensive, these are the four possible ways to rest. Note that sleeping under the stars is always free while the three establishments cost GP based on the party's average level. And yes, I know that the tavern has a higher chance of theft than sleeping for free--the thieves prefer sneaking into rooms than in the forest.

Under the Stars Three battles before tiring, one feat, ~5% chance of theft, no gifts.

Rutting Hog Tavern Six battles before tiring, two feats, ~10% chance of theft, no gifts.

Meridia's Inn Ten battles before tiring, four feats, ~1% chance of theft, ~4% chance of gifts.

Hotel laSuivelle Sixteen battles before tiring, six feats, no chance of theft, ~12% chance of gifts.

Does this seem like an interesting or an annoying set of mechanics? Is it too confusing or too punishing? I ask you, citizens of RMN!
Is there any limit to how often a player can sleep under the stars? As it stands, sleeping outside twice is EXACTLY the same as sleeping at the Rotting Hog once, only it's free. The chance of theft should really be lower at the Rotting Hog to give the player reason to go there as opposed to just roughing it.
Already replied at RRR, so I copied my response here.
Sounds interesting but I seriously want a 5-star suite if that package is going to cost an arm and a leg.
I think tired should be ~5 to 10%, and exhausted be 30%. You'd go from easily beating the enemies to just getting by to being in terrible danger. Continue past this long enough, and the hero(es) will plop down in the middle of the dungeon! Same as sleeping under the stars, but with a 25% chance of getting robbed and/or attacked.

It'd be three battles from sleeping under the stars to get tired, and six to be exhausted. 12 to pass out.
Ten from sleeping in a nice inn to get tired, 20 to be exhausted. 40 to pass out.
And the lavish inn 16 to get tired, 32 to be exhausted. 64 to pass out.

If battles in Demon Tower work like most RPGs, you'll be at least halfway to the next level, if not more, after 32 battles, so that'd be a good time to stop and rest and save.

The game now uses static EXP levels (every 500 EXP, level up!), so I know for a fact that after 14 battles you will gain a level... less if you also find a miniboss/boss.

I really like your tired/exhausted idea, VideoWizard. That makes it less punishing but still keeps the effect.

Toasters: It's a matter of convenience. The effects of sleeping don't stack.
Yeah, a stim pack or adrenalin rush item/spell that temporarily relieves exhaustion would be pretty cool.

Maybe add a new attribute called Conditioning that would help reduce the effect of tiredness. It could help differentiate between the classes (where Soldier-types would typically out endure, say, a frail mage-type).

Also, I like how you asked "Is this to complicated?" and here we are suggesting changes that make it even more confusing!

Much less than punishing than the fatigue system in my current project. Still seems like it could get kind of annoying.

Why chance of theft when waiting outside? Shouldn't it be chance of random/wandering monster attack?

Max: That's a good idea (monster attacks). The world is points of light in the darkness, after all...

I like the 'exhaustion heal' and 'conditioning' ideas a lot. Conditioning probably wouldn't be an attribute, however, but rather a passive effect that inflicted a less-severe form of exhaustion. Stim packs would be neat for a battle-long rush of endurance (although probably OUTLAWED or somesuch and therefore not available in most purchasing situations) and would save the player's rear end if they suddenly ran into a miniboss. Not that you can run into enemies in Demon Tower accidently, but whatevs.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT THING I WOULD LIKE TO BRING UP (copypasta from RRR or .org or somewhere, I don't remember):
Well, you are not going to be resting under the stars every time unless you are a penny-pincher, so you are going to have >= 6 battles each time you go into a dungeon. The prices are (going to be) based on the gold dropped by the average encounter--the tavern is one encounter's worth, the inn is ~2.5 encounters worth, and the hotel is four encounters worth. You'll probably be able to spend a lot of time at the hotel unless you are saving up for something in particular!

MODIFY: MAJOR CHANGE (thanks rmxp.org!)

I actually like the combination of Crystalgate and OCD's ideas--and it makes me do a V8-style facepalm. See, I'm a fervent supporter of DO NOT PUNISH THE PLAYER and, uh... a tired status does just that.

I'm 80% (I'm taking a Stats class; I'm allowed to come up with random percentages!) positive that I'm going to use Feats and temporary stat+ conditions instead of TIRED/HUNGRY/EXHAUSTED stuff.

On another forum, some people suggested having a passive skill/attribute that made Tired have less of an effect. I think that I'll adapt that to giving a character a stat+ condition from the next sleeping-level up (I'll have a boost above the Hotel, obviously).

So, keeping the other numbers the same, it'll look like this:

Sleeping Outside No boost; Tavern +10% boost (4 battles); Inn +15% boost (5 battles); Hotel +30% boost (7 battles); Montoya Schedule* Hotel Boost +40% boost (7 battles).

*Montoya Schedule is going to be the Princess Bride-inspired (Inigo only sleeps four hours a night!) passive skill that increases the boost. An experienced sleeper will not gain the boost for extra battles.
