FINAL FANTASY XII
Posts
Is it just me or does Final Fantasy 12 just plain suck? I mean I KNOW it's pretty to look at, but the combat system was dull, the plot uninspiring and the game as a whole made up of waaaay to many fetch and carry quests? What happened to the games that would grip you from the second you saw the opening sequence and not let go till the credits rolled? What happened to character interaction so deep you cried when one died? In short - what happened to the series and where did FFXII go wrong?
I actually like FFXII. The battles are really fun to me. The thing I hate about the game is the ridiculous names. Mt. Bur-Omisace? Come the fuck on.
I felt that it lacked many redeeming qualities - and the dungeons were waaaaay too long, there were huge areas of no plot, just random wondering through generic 'sewer' or 'ruin'. Does that make sense?
Well...the names are all wacky cause it's supposed to be along the lines of FF Tactics seiries. Thus, Ivalice...
But they get really rediculous.
I heard the story was top notch, but I dunno myself.
I do know however that the battle system was NOT a fiasco like many expected and works quite well, a good departure from the regular turn based affair.

I must admit that i loved Final Fantasy 12 but it wasn't as good as previous ones such as 10. Some of the things that really pissed me off in the game were:
How long it took to find a save crystal is some places. For example, in the Henne mines you had to make it to the boss without saving. If i had died i would have thrown the game out the window.
Another thing was how the bosses always cast the most powerful status conditions. One example is the Elder Wyrm where he cast a move which stuffed all your characters up.

I found the really big letdown was the story - vacant, uninteresting and in some cases purely pointless. Why was our hero there? What was his motivation? There was little character progression and the most interesting character (a fusion of james bond and captain jack sparrow) was given the smallest level of all. RPGS are all about the story and this one plain sucked. Its the only rpg I've considered dropping and not going back to (and I've played a LOT)
I thought FF12 was the best one in the main series after 9 and 6. It had a great, novel battle system, engaging and frequent side quests, a pretty cool character customization gimmick and brilliant dialogue, plus it was actually challenging in some parts (admittedly mostly sidequests), which is more than I can say for most of the Final Fantasies since the Super Nintendo era.
Pretty much what Shadowtext said. Despite having weak characters and a pretty contrived plot. One of the big points that people hack into FF12 about is that going from one area to another has almost a clear-cut change in scenery, specifically between Nabudis, Giruvegan (i think that's the jungle there), and the desert area. The transitions are everything but seamless. But to me, that was a plus. I'd rather instantly change between one area to another than trudge and trod through endless filler terrain.
I've almost beat the game, and in my opinion, it's one of the best of the series. I'd say its far superior to FFX. So far I've enjoyed it as much as any of the playstation FFs, and more than FF1-4. The only one I actually consider better at this point is FF6. I enjoyed 7 and 8 more, but I think that's partly because I was pretty young when I first played them.
The only thing missing that i thought was a let down in the game was the storyline. Half the time the storyline didn't make any sense or connect to what the plot was meant to be. Final Fantasy 10 had a good storyline but less play.
author=demondestiny link=topic=295.msg3833#msg3833 date=1191717833Final Fantasy X was an absolute waste of time with a whiny little main character and total fuckenwaste of a story. But I will say I really enjoyed the blitzball and side Quests. Final Fantasy XII to me was a great game, great gameplay with a ton to do. DD I agree with you on the story but I cant say it was confusing at all, in fact if you just figured out the whole Nethicite thing, you knew the whole story practically.

FFX was one of my favs so I'm gonna ignore that comment. I will say that FFXII did suck in the sense that it had a crap storyline, crap characterisation, crap interaltionships but it's side quests and battlesystem were great.Admitadly I hated the dodgy storyline and such I didn't get into it. I passed it very easily (with active) and the ending to the game was by far the worst of any FF game!
Yeah. I didn't think much of the ending either. Kinda spoiled the game a bit.
Eijin: What i meant by confusing is that some of the bosses and places they added in the game weren't linked to the story at all. Sometimes it kinda went off the track.

Usually it's a divide between Love X Loathe XII or Loathe X Love XII (Usually)
On that note While I can live with X I neither Love or Loathe it. I'm of the same opinion for XII as well.
For me FF X was a welcomed break from the angsty teenagers in desperate need of a diary and a haircut (he only needed the haircut) with it's stranger in a strange land plot (vs the usual generic anime storyline including the same old plotholes) , but I didn't care for the fact that the game was more railroaded than Super Mario Bros.
FF XII on the other hand didn't even star a bunch of raging hormone infused gods along with a generic cast and crew typical of the last six games. Instead players played characters that could easily be transported into the real world without needing several mandatory visits to an insane asylum. Unfortunately, because everything was so big by the time you got to the next checkpoint and thus the next scene chances are you would've forgotten some or most of what happened from the last scene it created a sense of disconnection between the player, the story, and the events.

There were a few moments in the game where the characters actually appeared to be human, like laughing and making jokes and such, but most of the time I felt like this game was as exciting as being a plumber.
Wait? Are you referring to the type of plumber that stomps on turtles, spits balls of fire, and rescues various damsels in distress? Or are are referring to the type that need to invest in either some overalls or some suspenders?
lol plumber. Although this game wasn't as good as the others in the series namely 7 & 9, for me anyways, this game has so much extra shit to do, and has the biggest optional boss in any Final Fantasy to date, I mean Yizamat(or something like that) 50 Million HP!! Also the whole ultimate weapons, secret hunts, rare games, fishing, side quests, optional bosses, etc.
