[NSFW] NUDITY IN ART (REDEMPTION)
Posts
I honestly don't care.
If someone paid me enough, I'd be willing to draw porn. I just haven't really got into the idea of doing commissions, as I don't really have the time.
Having said all that, I can totally understand people who think the contrary.

Well, at least you're being honest, Kars.
I'm not morally against it, but I think in many situations it's just lame. Art is supposed to reflect something that the artist is trying to reflect, and if the artist is trying to reflect a sexy anime girl with ridiculous proportions, then... they're not saying anything too positive about themselves, and is giving off the image of being alienated and detached. If it's more in the vein of life drawing and trying to master drawing the human body and showing the soul or mind beneath the body, then it's different. .

QFT.
This is what I meant by porn vs. art. I take issue (similar to Canuck's it seems) with people confusing the two. He just put it better than I could.

Why?
author=Canuck link=topic=3070.msg60282#msg60282 date=1233651966Canuck pretty much summed it up for me. I should've left out the "no matter how it's used" from my original post, because it can be beautiful depending on how and why it's done.

I work in the art world (as a professional Graphic Designer and Illustrator) and work a lot with schools, occasionally using resource sites for free textures or stock images to add to the designs at hand when I have no time to sample my own. Currently I am based inside a secondary school and am teaching the ideal of copyright on images you have created and the way that the internet has somewhat muddied this idea. I was using Deviantart.com as an example for lessons and lectures, however mid-term the so called 'herts learning grid' which filters materials available on the net for schools, classified deviantart at an 'Adult' site and banned it. This is because of nude sketches and photography found on the site. You can imagine the argument I had to have to get that decision turned around, and it's still ongoing!
I strongly believe that nude work is fine within an artistic context (and believe me there's nothing LESS sexy than sitting with other people and sketching a naked man or woman in the middle of a room) sometimes it is even necessary for teaching art techniques and artistic means. There are a lot of messages to be put across via the image of a naked body, and a certain sensuality is among them. I do however have a problem with people submitting two anime characters rogering eachother with household items and calling it 'art'. That's fetishism, and a different thing to art entirely. The point is that nudity and art have always been connected, from the sculptures of ancient Greece to Renaissance paintings, and should be nothing to be ashamed of.

Just weighing in with my opinion on this topic.
That they are...
It seems that most of you dislike sexual/erotic pictures. I really believe there's nothing bad about them, even if they are meant to arouse you (meaning pornography).

That's not the impression I'm getting from many of the replies here in this topic!

Well, maybe I'm jumping the gun then. But it sounds like something similar to that, right?
First of all...
and...
But I guess those aren't saying that they HATE it. I guess I found that the negative things they were saying pretty much fit the description of some of the things I draw, which offended me (i.e. they said things like it was stupid and pointless, and if it were to me, I wouldn't be drawing it) but I'm trying not to overreact about it.

Nudity should be banned.

While I find sexual content to be distasteful no matter how it's used, it's usually easy to tell the difference between someon's artistic endeavors and some idiots' sexual fantasy. Of course, there are still some that blur the line further...

Haha.
I should clean this up sometime. Her left hand is funky as hell.
I dislike sex and erotic pictures. They are really disgusting. Can't you think of anything else to draw? I don't really think there is such a thing as a fine line between art and erotica. You cannot have sexy and serious at the same time, or sexy and funny at the same time. Karsuman's art, for example, is usually funny and is therefore not sexy at all. And, by the way, nudity is not the same as erotica! (pervert)

Man, it's a really sad day when people consider sex disgusting.
It is a sin!!
I mean, elaborate on what you mean. If you mean stuff like hentai and furry shit and whatnot than I would agree with you. But if you mean any sort of artful depiction of sex, as in the copulation of two people than that's much more broad, man! I mean there is a creative difference between drawing two horses fucking each other or bukkake or whatever between a painting of a man and a woman in an erotic embrace or something.
While it can be twisted into a pretty gross and freaky thing, sex at its core is a very beautiful and sensual act and I don't see why any and all depictions of it is gross/disgusting!

I just seem to recall Brandon saying he doesn't really like sex that much in general.
But I mean, there are people who also do like sex, and porn, so why not just make the choice to not look at it?

Exactly. I you feel you have to rant about (which sometimes I feel I have to rant about something), then go ahead, but do it once and only once. Then follow through with the bolded statement above...and just not look at it.
That's all well and good, Mitsu, but I'd also say it's fair to help those that aren't looking for that kind of material. If there is nudity in your game, or your deviantart page or what not, just make sure people know that it's NSFW or contains sexual material. If you do that now, good.
I also wanted to throw this out there, because it would appear this character you like to draw nude, Sai, is a character from a game called, "A Kid and His Ninja." This may sound funny to you, but would Sai, the character herself, be comfortable being exposed as she is? You describe her as a martial artist, master mathematician, introverted, self-centered, and cold. Would a character with such a guarded personality be so willingly vulnerable? What is Sai's say in the whole matter? =)
