TOP TEN TOPIC: FAVORITE 10 SNES GAMES

Posts

Pages: first 123 next last
I am starting a new weekly thread called the Top Ten Topic wherein we list our top 10 favorite whatever-that-week's-topic-is-about and then discuss our lists by pointing out what a moron you are for not including Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

This week's Top Ten Topic is:

..:: Top 10 Favorite SNES Games ::..

(For reference: List of SNES games)
I'll start. I'm adding a link and a blurb about why I like the game.

10. Mega Man X
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Man_X_(video_game)
The Blue Bomber gets an upgrade in his first SNES appearance, and it kicks ass. Mega Man could upgrade his armor, boots, helmet and buster cannon (and a hidden upgrade capsule housing the Hadouken Fireball). As usual, Capcom implemented precise controls for Mega Man and it makes it a joy to play. This game also introduced Zero, Mega Man's lame badass friend who's cool because he has a BEEM SWODRD!

9. Earthworm Jim
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthworm_Jim
Another run n' gun game, but a heck of a lot of fun. I liked the design of Jim, his ability to use his worm body as a whip or helicopter, and the ability to aim in any direction. Plus the game was funny, in a teenager-haha-cows sort of way. The music was good, too.

8. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_World_2:_Yoshi's_Island
Probably one of the best entries in 2D Mario games. It was well made, well designed and a lot of fun to play. It also introduced a lot of Yoshi's moveset, which was used heavily in the later Super Smash Bros.

7. Super Mario Kart
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Kart
Kart racing? Mario characters? Battle Arena? Koopa shells as weapons? Count me in. This game is one of the best racing games, ever.

6. SimCity
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimCity
I spent so many hours playing the game that it deserved this high ranking on my list. The game is simple, with no clear goals, but amazingingly addictive. The SNES version added reward buildings, which was the kicker for me. Catchy music, too.

5. Secret of Mana
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_of_Mana
Secret of Mana uses real-time battles akin to the Legend of Zelda series' games, but with the statistical-based elements of the RPG genre and a unique "ring menu" system. In addition, with its brightly colored graphics, expansive plot, and soundtrack by Hiroki Kikuta, Secret Of Mana has been called one of the greatest video games ever made. I tend to agree. For the longest time I thought the sprite was a girl, though.

4. Kirby Super Star
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirby_Super_Star
This game is plain fun. It is the first Kirby video game that allows Kirby to perform a fairly wide arsenal of attacks with a single copy ability, and Kirby's versatility made this game a real joy to play. That, and Cutter is cool.

3. E.V.O.: Search for Eden
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.V.O.:_Search_for_Eden
Probably best described as an RPG platformer, but based on evolution of animals rather than the typical knights and wizards. By eating defeated enemies, players gain "Evolution points" that can be used to modify the creature they are playing as. These improvements include bigger jaws, scales, horns, fins, longer neck, jumping ability, swimming ability, flying ability and more. By evolving, your character gains more hit points, greater speed, stronger attacks, and even certain special abilities such as flight. The story takes place over 5 stages of life's evolution: the Age of Fish, the Age of Amphibians, the Age of Dinosaurs, the Age of Mammals, and finally the Age of Eden. So much fun, and has a lot of replayability.

2. Final Fantasy VI
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VI
In my opinion, the best Final Fantasy game of the entire franchise. Known as Final Fantasy III in North America, I bought this game used from the local video store for $40. It has excellent graphics for the SNES (probably among the best for the entire system, if not the best), an amazing musical store, deep story and addictive gameplay, this game was your typical RPG with everything done right. Plus, Kefka is the best villain ever.

1. Chrono Trigger
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrono_Trigger
This was a very tough choice. Was this game going to be #1 or #2 on my list? This game is RPG perfection, and one of the greatest video games of all time (It came in second place behind The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the IGN Reader's Choice 2006 list of 100 greatest video games of all time). I still play this game on my emulator every couple of years or so.

Honourable Mentions:
NHL '96
Metal Warriors
Super Bomberman
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time
Vegas Stakes
Adventure Island 2
Rock 'N Roll Racing
Donkey Kong Country
Micro Machines
Rampart

(And, no, I didn't forget about Link to the Past, Super Metroid and Super Mario RPG. I just didn't much care for them.)
An excellent selection, and topic thread my friend. My favourites (in no particular order because I love them all so much)

Megaman X
Chrono Trigger
Yoshi's Island
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy IV
Lufia 2
Tales of Phantasia
Star Ocean
Robotrek
Kirby: Super Star

I'm not comfortable with any idea that can't be expressed in the form of men's jewelry

I haven't played very many SNES games, but I'll try to make a list of 10.

1. Chrono Trigger (It really is as good as they say)
2. Terranigma (Zelda-ish RPG with a darker story, different types of attacks and great atmosphere)
3. Donkey Kong Country (Super Mario World with better graphics and crazy music)
4. Super Mario World (absolutely classic)
5. Final Fantasy V (Job system. Enough said)
6. Final Fantasy IV (Great characters; plus, you get to go to the moon)
7. Secret of Mana (Multitudes better than Sword)
8. Super Mario RPG (Haven't finished it, but it's pretty fun)
9. Super Mario: Yoshi's Island (only played the GBA version, but it was on the SNES, so...)
10. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Because I stink at Zelda games)

I actually haven't played enough of Final Fantasy VI to know how good it is, but if I did play enough of it it would probably be on this list, so...
Play FFVI. Like I said, it's the best in the series.
Good topic. My favourite ten would have to be these:

10. Donkey Kong country 2.
9. International Tennis Tour.
8. Super Mario World.
7. Legend of Zelda link to the past.
6. Mortal Combat 3.
5. Megaman X.
4. Secret of Mana.
3. SimCity.
2. Chrono Trigger.
1. Final Fantasy VI.

These would have to be my top ten.
1. Final Fantasy II
2. Metal Warriors
3. Genghis Khan II
4. Chrono Trigger
5. EVO: Search for Eden
6. Tecmo Secret of the Stars
7. Super Black Bass
8. Final Fantasy III
9. Paladin's Quest
10. Lufia

So hard...I actually own most of those carts...5 of them at least. EVO and Metal Warriors are actually REALLY REALLY hard to find (for less than $60 at least). I picked up Secret of Mana for $5 at a farmers market last weekend...gotta love that!

2. SM
3. SD 2
4. SMW
5. CT

I hoping to change this soon when I finally get the chance to play Castlevaina Dracula X Rondo of Blood, Front Mission, Star Ocean, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest VI, and possibly Fire Emblem 3 Mystery of the Emblem.

4.) Yoshi's Island
5.) Megaman X2
6.) Super Mario World
7.) Kirby Superstar
8.) Megaman X

Did anyone play Tecmo's Children of the Stars? It was one of those completely drab role players that my childhood mindstate made very memorable. Anyways, if I worked for a magazine I'd have to say Chrono Trigger had the best everything on the SNeS...

3. Secret of Mana
4. Earthbound
5. Kirby Super Star

Rawr! It's Secret of the Stars! and I love it (and own it)! haha
lol yeah something about that game had a very charming quality...twas the music now that I think about it. Like the cave theme, if you took that and transcripted it into an orchestra or piano, it would be quite good.
A fantastic game with fantastic music. Trully a fun game to play.
How in the bloody blue blazes could I have forgotten Star Fox? HOW? I ask you HOW?
