DRAGON QUEST: SWORDS

I've just started playing through 'Dragon Quest: Swords' on the Wii, and so far I'm enjoying the light-hearted approach and decent voice-acting quality that you rarely see outside of the DQ games these days. That said the play does sometimes feel slightly repetative and less thought-out than I had hoped (one town, repeating the same dungeons, etc). Still, it's a fine little adventure - what do other people think of this first forray into new RPG territory?
I've beaten this game and it is a lot of fun. Although it only took me about 8 hours. I actually hated the voices. The only shining point of this game is the battles, which we're great. I was insanely annoyed with the movement system in dungeons until I realized that you're on a set track and you just need to move forward and it turns for you. That actually made it better. Not sure if it was worth $50, but it was a good time while it lasted.
Where the hell did you come from Enker???

Also, I really want to try a dragon quest game (never played one before), so perhaps I will pick this up.

can't make a bad game if you don't finish any games

Don't pay $50 for this. Pick up DQVIII for $35 instead. Trust me.
Over here in the UK it's a remarkably cheap purchase for an rpg defficient console, much like VIII before it I am a big fan of the translation and voice teams, who work in so many very English jokes (for example the equipment seller greets you with 'Hello my lover' which is a line of some jest over here after Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, among other things). I'm hoping that the game gets a sequel, as for a first try at a new sub-genre of rpg it shows a lot of promise. It would be cool to see multiplay and perhaps class-based skills spread across the three other controllers. Imagine working with a friend who'se using the wii-mote as a wand to cast spells by drawing runes, etc. It has a lot of potential.

The UK, England, Hertford. I've been a site member for ages and am still working on the mammoth Shadow's Reach.
I personally never really been much of a fan of dragon quest games... but I saw a video of the dragon quest for the wii, could be something I would enjoy since you swing the sword with the nunchaku.

Well, it's not a genuine style for Dragon Quest. I'd follow the advice and go for VIII.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
As it happens, I just picked this up for like £15 the other day. It seems alright so far, but the only battle I've actually done is the first, training battle. I guess I'll see more if I can get around to playing it anytime (Disgaea 3, Ultimate Megadrive Collection and Exit Fate are conspiring against me), but it seemed fairly solid. Definitely not meant to be taken as an alternative to a serious entry in the series, though, by the looks of things.
