RPG MAKER VERSIONS THESE DAYS - QUESTION FROM A BEGINNER
Posts
Long time reader, first time poster of a creation-based question.
A while back I started working on sprites and story for a game idea, but life happened and I never had time to really get off the ground doing maps and such. I really don't have much time now either, but thought it would be fun to start working on an RPG Maker game in my spare time, especially after playing a few good ones lately.
My question is this: Are people still using RPG Maker 2003 (which I have), or are the new ones significantly better? I ask because I generally like the FFVI-style of combat (not to mention I've been working on sprites for such), and didn't think the new Makers used that system. Of course there's also the option of some kind of override, but I don't know if that's possible.
While I'm at it, I'm also looking for some good village and town tilesets...the spirtes I'm using are FFVI-inspired, so any of those era of SNES game tilesets would work.

Yes some people here do use RpgMaker 2k3. Not because it is better than the newer makers (which has been debated into the ground) but because people are just used to having it. The newer makers have a script feature allowing you to pretty much edit ANYTHING that you want to see changed. So whatever battle system you want can be implemented.
Just download the XP and VX trials to see if you fancy them. If not stick with 2k3. Personally I'm fond of VX, but since I have a project already in the works for 2k3, it's a bit late for me to switch (and 2k3 is still a nice program).
Also http://necro.shardweb.net/ might have what you need.

Yes.or are the new ones significantly better?
Also yes.
Not exactly, they have the potential to be better though because they have more powerful engines, but there are many better games for 2003 than XP/VX, imo.

That's because 2k3 has been out longer and more people use it. There are more good 2k3 games because there are more 2k3 games.
Agreed. I hope you try out the VX demo, it's a much more capable engine than 2k3. Learning RGSS scripting really isn't that hard if you try, and the things you can do with it are fantastic.

No, that's not what I meant. I'm saying it's not the version of the maker that will determine the quality of a game--it's the skill of the designer.

Heck, I'm impressed by some of the things I've managed WITHOUT any scripting ability.
I suppose since I have no experience at all, I might as well start fresh with the newest version. I have programming experience (no game programming, however), so there's that...Really the only reason I was resisting trying the new ones was I'm going for an FFIV-style combat system. That is: Simple. My time is limited and I mostly just want a good story (easier said than done of course), but maybe when I learn to use the tools more could be done. I generally do like the FF-style of combat, so hopefully that system can be used in VX through scripting? If not, eh.
That said, I'm well aware the odds of me actually finishing a game. I dug up the sprites I'd done before life got in the way, and I'd only fully animated one character. The other seven main ones ended up only having their front views done. -_-

I don't very much like XP or VX.
I rather work with 2K3.
The reason why I use 2K3, is that event scripting is so easy.
Hell, I've already made a CBS. And a CMS.
XP is harder to use.

Yes, and there happens to be a simple plug n' play script for VX that returns every single missing event command from 2k, 2k3 and XP.
XP might have an equivalent, but I am not aware of it since I don't use XP.

Er can't you do event "scripting" in XP and VX?
See the entirety of mage duel.

I'll have to disagree. Although "easier" might be equated to "more quickly" in this case, I have to say RGSS makes it MUCH easier to code a CMS or a CBS.
Before you completely go off of RM2K/RM2k3 in favor of the more recent versions, I'd suggest you check out one of the better games created using it: the Flashbulb Madness.
www.theflashbulbmadness.com
It, in my opinion, shows the true potential of RM2K. One of my rather influential inspirations.

The website is as ugly as sin and I can't find a download link. Also, why would I 'donate' for a strategy guide?
There is also a 100% chance that this game could be recreated in XP and VX, but made better.

On "donating" for a strategy guide, don't we do that whenever we pay for a strategy guide? (Mainly why I don't, internet is so much easier (and cheaper :P))
And I don't mean to sound rude, but did you even attempt to poke around? The links are right there at the top. (I do agree that they should be more clearly labeled, but they are there nonetheless)

Advice from a Pro:
Start with something easy for you personally to use, regardless of the program's popularity or power. Focus on Game Design and your Story writing, not on nifty features and great graphics. Resources do not make for good design. Also, don't worry about the opinion of anyone here (including me) and don't worry about the ever-going impotent debate of 2003 vs XP vx VX vs Ika vs PineappleNinjaEngine (j/k).
If you want to make a game, make a game. The rest will come with practice.
