This looks pretty fun. I think I'll get it.

Both of those concepts have prototypes in FF6's gameplay.

This is truth. I'm not going to explain it, look it up.

Or maybe, Feldschlact, you can explain it to the ladies and gentlemen.
Bah. Ah well, I'll explain it.

(characters playing almost the same,

While not as bad as FFVII, FFVIII, and FFXIII, besides for special abilties, characters weren't terribly dissimilar. Unlike say, FFIV, where Rosa was going to be your healer, Rydia was going to be your summoner, and Cecil was going to be your heavy hitter, the distinctions between characters in FFVI weren't too wide. Most of the characters in FFVI can play the exact same roles, and that leads me to

materia system,

Espers in FFVI. Any character can learn any spell, at any time (once you have the appropriate Esper). Sounds a lot like the materia system, no?

One stark difference between FF7 and FF6, is that magic becomes the overpowered part in FF7. FF6 it is everything else that makes your characters unstoppable.

Also, they killed the Magic Evade bug in VII.

Also in the GBA version of FF6.
Hahaha FF6 mechanics

There were only two important attributes in the game and neither were raised by Espers (and one is only important due to a bug)

*edit*
Oh hey maybe its just one in the GBA version

I would say that it's more closer to FF8 than the materia system (and even that's a stretch). In FF6 you're linking summons to characters to gain spells and level up with extra attributes. In ff7 you're putting individual spells into weapon slots. But not just spells, you can put in support materia (blue) which have strange effects like counter attack or HP up, or All. There's also yellow materia which allow for more physical skills like steal, sense. There's also the red materia in which summons are basically their own materia and do not give you stat bonuses or spells. But are just really powerful attacks with limited use. On top of this, magic and summon materia make you physically weaker. And all through the game you're basically running around collecting these.

As for the character differences, I guess I could give you that. But then again, Sabin is the only person who can pull off street fighter moves, and Egar is the only one who can chainsaw a monster in half, Shadow who can just throw shit and send his dog after people, Cyan with that weird sword timing thing. And it goes on. As a kid without being too over-analyzing about the systems, you could see character variation, and you could see that ff6 was way different from ff7.

Even if I'm wrong in both of these, there's still a difference in pacing, setting, presentation, and graphics etc. So my point stands either way.

Eh. Besides for Fixed Dice+Offering, what else is more powerful than Gem Box+Economizer+Quick+Ultima in Final Fantasy VI?

Of course they're two different games, but my point also stands. As far as materia/Espers and character handling in FF6 and FF7, they're really similar and FF6's systems are what FF7's systems and so on would draw inspiration from.

Cyan

Plus by the time you get that combo the game is trivial anyways
Cyan is actually one of the worst characters in the game unless you're talking about a glitch or something.
Any character who gets infinite attacks until everything is dead is #1 in my book

Look up the Psycho Cyan Glitch
Oh yeah, Psycho Cyan. But that's a glitch, that doesn't really count towards a legit game strategy or mechanic, eh?
You asked for something that does more damage, I just gave the best non-instant death attack as a response ;) (plus you didn't mention that the 5-Ultima is more effective since setting up the glitch takes a few turns and by that time 5-Ultima would kill everything)
I take it you don't hack Joker Doom eithers (not even counting Reverse-Joker Doom)

It's been ages since I've had a late-game party, but wouldn't Quick+Offering+GenjiGlove with raw max damage do more? That's 16 hits at 4999 (I think you can boost this with the Hero Ring by another grand, but I'm not sure) for 80k. 5-Ultimas can only do more if there's more than one enemy.
Quick+Offering+GenjiGlove with any regular ol' character isn't as efficient as Quick+Offering+GenjiGlove with Setzer and Fixed Dice, because he can do WAY more damage with them than anyone else because it takes so long (longer than people actually realize to do 9999 damage with physical hits consistently.

5-Ultimas can only do more if there's more than one enemy.

I believe that Ultima actually scales its damage up if there's just one enemy, if I remember right.
Hahaha nice

Also 5-Ultimas is capped at 50k damage to any enemy (10k damage to one * 5, one use when setting up quick, two on each quick-turn) while 16-5k's is 80k (5k * 16) unless I missed something.

Plus if you can't improve the 5k damage via a Hero Ring equip a Gem Box and throw in an Ultima when casting Quick. Sure you can only do this combo five times without healing assuming you have max MP but now you're doing 90k damage instead of 80k
*edit*
I'm an idiot who forgot what relics do what (which extends to my 'Offering+GenjiGlove+HeroRing' argument, I really should play FF3 again)

In other news, no one's managed to rip the battle theme. :'(

Then again, it deserves to be bought properly.

Is Nobuo back with Squenix for this, or is someone channeling his spirit or something?
Yus. The battle music, as well as the rest of the music in the FFXIII trailer has been ripped. here be thy link.

Hopefully they give Versus XIII and Agito XIII the same treatment.

Isn't Agito just that shitty looking PSP card game?
