No, it's not a thread for posting screenshots, but for discussing them.
Screenshots are important to the success of a game, as they're often the first (and sometimes only) thing people look at before deciding to download or not. So, that means screenshots can sway the crowd or break the deal completely!
How do you guys pick the screenshots you post for your games? What kind of things do you think are important to highlight?
And, most importantly, what do you look for in other games' screenshots that helps you decide whether or not you want to play them?
I myself usually try to show pictures of the game's different modes (such as field vs. battle, etc.), an important or intriguing piece of dialogue, and some of the more unique areas in the game.

Well, when picking screenshots, I usually pick ones that are visually captivating. But that's just me however.
In other peoples' screenshots, I usually look for the ones that are visually interesting, or have an interesting mechanic. To me, visuals mean a lot :).

I'm concerned about the variety of the screenshots shown, just as the variety of a game. I simply can't post 15 screens of one battlesystem, or 5 screens of some random dialouge/interactions from the game. I'd go as far as to avoid posting "walking around in X town" if I aldready posted one of the X townhouses' interior.
Screenshots should always Show Off something. They are there to be eyecandy and visually interesting. No one wants to see menus (Unless they're exiting good looking menus. Or if the menus are the most interesting/only thing your game has). You should try to "compose" screenshots if you really want to properly show off. Some postproduction on the won't hurt either. Just make the game look as good as possible.
Because I know, when it comes to free games, the deciding factor in a download is a screenshot. I don't care about massive feature lists or exciting story opportunities. When I'm downloading a game I want to see something I want in a screenshot. (Of course to me that means that I don't want to see anything that makes me think anime) If a screenshot isn't interesting I'm not even looking at the featurelist.
I haven't done a lot of screenshotting my games. But the couple I did I picked out a cut-scene and some dialogue. I think it might have been some slightly funny remark. Since my game was a very simple AGS game there wasn't really much else to go on. (If my game had had more exciting visuals I would have picked up the best ones combined with some funny dialogue and an explosion or two. All in one shot)
At least one shot should always be when you're doing something not regular. For example if your main character (or a bunch of other characters) do poses you do not normally see (juggling bombs while standing on each other's shoulders and reciting shakespearean poetry) that's when you take a screenshot. Don't worry if it's a "spoiler moment" because if you're good about it the player won't even know it's a spoiler until they come across the scene in the game "Oh that's the screenshot!"

hahahahaha I just popped in to say when I first glanced at this thread I thought it was called screenscatology hahahaha
Also screenshots are stupid and people place too much stock in them but I AM GUILTY OF THIS TOO. Very guilty. I don't know why, I just can't READ on RMN. : "(

99% of screenshots don't interest me because they are mostly
- maps maps and more maps
- bad lighting or fog effects
- RM2k(3) DBS
I prefer gameplay videos (argh to any video that feels like a movie's first trailer) that aren't downconverted for youtube myself
*edit*
I generally don't post screenshots since anything that I'd post here is
- One of the above three
- Needs more work

I like most screenshots. They are especially nifty if you show off an edited sprite pose that you've done (unless you're F-G) or a flashy attack animation.
Screenshots tell me three things about the game:
-If I can see things or not *COUGHoverlay whoresCOUGH*
-Dialogue (assuming there is dialogue being displayed)
-The grapheexs 8)
Annnnnd that's about it, pretty useless. Granted if it's a game with custom or heavily edited graphics, I might give it a try more than others. However their usefulness is elevated by 300% if the game isn't even made yet. Mmmmm pre-hype.
I wouldn't be so hard on screenshots if we all made unique custom graphics for our games, but c'est la vie.

One of the reasons I don't really like screenshots is, like most people, it doesn't really show all that much unless you have custom stuff -- we've all seen town maps, world maps, dungeon maps, the RM2k(3) DBS, the DMS, etc, etc.
Gameplay videos are... somewhat better, though unless there's something amazingly different that's shown off in motion, there's not really much point to it. I'm guilty of creating pointless gameplay videos (and equally pointless screenshots).
There's also the fact that they fuel the Hype Machine, and the Hype Machine destroys forests, leaving no place for the faeries to live. So please, before you post hype-shots, think of the faeries.

Somebody please think of the faeries!
Also I just take a sreenshot of whatever I'm doing as a kind of progress post mostly.. Or if I have done something I'm proud of.

Menus. Custom ones. Show me why the interface for your game is worth a damn.

Screenshots are the only thing I really look at unless I know the author and can expect them to have writing skills. Because most games now are poorly written.
Also, the largest issue with screenshots is all the people who just post "Looks good/fine/decent," or the people who just post to show off without taking criticism. The point of screenshots is to receive feedback, and people rarely do this anymore. When I visit the screenshot topic, I make an effort to give detailed feedback, and even then, people just kind of give excuses to ignore my criticism.

This community consists of 4 people now? Gee, sure is lonely around here!
Yes.
Azn: I definitely see that here and at other sites. It's not about words, it's about pictures! Some site encourage less talking in the ss threads, though.
