GAMEJOLT AD REVENUE SHARING?

Firstly, sorry if people have already talked about this, I haven't seen a topic like that.

I saw an advertisement on GW for a site called Gamejolt (http://gamejolt.com/developers/ad-sharing/), that is working on giving amateur developers a cut of the ad revenue that any of their games generate. Dreaming of NotSMW generating $0.12 a month and being THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING, I've signed up, but haven't quite uploaded my game yet (they don't seem to accept demos. Well, demo uploads, anyway. I think 'In production' gamepages are fine).

I'm just a naturally a little cautious. At the moment everything seems fine. It's not like you're selling the ripped graphics or anything, and a mirror's a mirror, I guess... it's just, the moment money comes into the equation, something seems a little off. I just wanted to know some of your opinions on it, I suppose. Any massive reason I'm missing why this is a bad idea or should I not be looking a gift horse in the mouth? Discuss.
Hey, Eike.

This is CROS from over at Game Jolt. What made you think that we wouldn't allow demos and work-in-progresses? We do, and actually allow you to categorize your game as such when you upload it. You don't even need a file for your game to add it to the site. Is there a particular page that made you think that you couldn't add demos?

Thanks!

I would say that yes, the moment money comes into the picture things seem off. There is absolutely no reason to introduce money into the equation.

The net amount of money you could get is most likely very paltry. Think about it: HEY UPLOAD YOUR AMATEUR GAME WITH STOLEN GRAPHICS AND MAKE $$$. It smells bad all around.
Yeah, I know what you mean... I'm still only thinking about it.

Er, I think it was this part. It's from the signup page (for gamers, but it's right next to the developers bit, so I read it anyway)

'Game Jolt is a place chock full of quality freeware games that are actively maintained by the developers themselves. We keep a tight watch to make sure that only quality freeware games are posted. No shareware, no demos, no twists. Only completely free games here.'

So I guess that threw me. :-\
I've heard of this concept being done in other genres. I remember reading abouta MySpace/Facebook-like page that did ad-revenue sharing once you signed up.

Though sharing these amateur games on a site like Jolt, many of which are made with an illegal maker (Rm2k/3), have graphical rips and musical rips (and who-knows-what-else rips), etc..., seems like a very legal grey area.
Yeah, the text that was there was definitely not clear. The no demos part meant that you shouldn't upload any demos for a shareware game. In the previous version of Game Jolt (years ago), many people submitted demos for games that you had to pay for.

Various parts of the site have been reworded to make it more clear.

As for the making money. I don't think we've been deceptive with you guys. We're not saying anyone will be rich. But even if you only make $1 from your game, at least it's something. It's just a way to give back.

As for graphical and musical rips. We do not monitor the site for graphical/musical rips. The people that have been violated will have to notify us of that. If they've gone through the necessary procedures, we may have to take the game down. However, this is money from ad revenue, not from selling the game.

And as for there being no reason to introduce money into the equation... I mean, if you don't want to get the ad revenue, that's fine. I know many developers would like to get back something for their games, even if it's small. Game Jolt is an indie project hosting site. So, you can easily put up your game and not make any money with it if you don't want to.

I'll probably do that. I'm more interested in the exposure than money (also somewhat worried about legalities).

Yeah I'm with Kentona the legal issues would worry me if I put something up with any rips/music from copyrighted material up and getting that ad revenue.
