LOTSA NEW PEOPLE...
Posts
So I was perusing the site stats and was pleased to see that the number of people registering every month is growing quickly!
For most of the site's history, we tended to average about 150-ish new registrations per month (with an exception on the site's inception, with 236). During the past few months, we've climbed from 192 to 287 to 312 in April, with 296 already in May (projected to 353 by the end of May at the current pace)*. Impressive!
If WIP or Holbert deigns to grace this topic, I'm sure that he'd dump a bevy of other encouraging stats about site hits and pageviews and the like.
After so many months of seeing roughly the same stat numbers I was worried we were stagnating, but I am encouraged by the recent signs of life in the community.
I hope this trend continues.
Still, though, I'd like to find a way to get the newly registered members to post more, in comments or even in the forums, and become a part of the community. Any ideas?

Yeah I've noticed that too. I always see a new "Newest Member Is:" but never see that username again. I think possibly a lot of people register because the site offers free hosting, that's why I originally signed up and then I discovered the forum. Maybe if we're patient we'll see more people showing their faces around here regarding they aren't bots.
I don't know if really there's a lot that can be done about it. It's good the site is popular though.

A piracy forum would surely bring members haha(Kidding).. Last resort. If people aren't interested in what is being offered here then there's really nothing we can do. Well get maybe a few active members on the forums from the ones that register though.

you took my job kentona
it's my goddamn job
Just kidding. It's refreshing seeing someone else make a topic like this. As for ideas, I'm sure one of us can and will think up an interesting gimmick/idea to get people to post more posts/comments, but one idea is to put some sort of 'announcement' on the site and forums (you know, the ones that say stuff like "Important Information on Game Releases" and so on) calling out new members to actually post comments and participate in the community (with the benefits of doing so) instead of just signing up, uploading their game, and leaving.
I know the site comment programming is being updated, so this doesn't apply to that, but it would also help if the forum software/programming wasn't so archaic. We don't even have the option to make polls, for gods sakes.
Such pessimism.

I think WIP has the right idea in making RMN into a pure-games databae site. Regarding the forum/gamepage merge, it turns the Game Development forum into our "workplace", so to speak. Off-topic becomes our place to chill and hang out "after work", you know?
At least that's how I thought of it.
Anyway, the main point is that we need to play up our strengths - we ARE modern RM game design, as opposed to other sites that are functionally a front for forums.

The site will be just shy of hitting 700,000 pageviews this month. This is an okay measure of the site growing. We go through a good amount of submissions.
In RMN3, people will be seeing some shifts on the way things are approached. Yes, some of the forums are being axed. But there are going to be new things that will hopefully promote people doing other things than floating around on a forum.
The forum isn't even close to being the top priority in RMN3. I like bullshitting, but there are more important things to focus on.
The RMN3 forums are completely new and reworked. They have the ability to work with polls, but it is a lower priority.
If all you do is look at the forum, you are doing it wrong.

Keep in mind I'm not just going FORUM FORUM FORUM. I mentioned the forums because I know that the main site is being worked on and improved as we speak, so me mentioning anything about that would be redundant; I brought up getting (rudimentary, really) upgrades for the forum because well, it's still going to be an important part of the site, and there's no reason to have this shiny brand spanking new site, and the forum code is still dusty and ancient.
Also, my 'Callout/Hey this is why you should participate' announcement is still a viable option to look at because not even RMN3 will totally prevent the urge some people to just drop their games off and never return. The first instinct is to say 'well too bad for them', but we want to encourage activity for everyone that bothers to sign up.

author=WIP link=topic=3848.msg77028#msg77028 date=1243385381That is true. What many people don't realize is for every accepted submission, there are about three that are denied.
