ADVANCED BATTLE ANIMATIONS USING THE BATTLECHAR SPRITES? (RM2K3)

How would I go about creating battle animations that involve the character's actual battlechar sprite? For example, if the character used a sword skill, instead of his normal "casting" battle animation, he would jump out, appear near the enemy, and cut him up? (If you've played Chrono Trigger, basically anything Crono or Frog does)
My theory is that you could make the battle casting sprite blank, and then import the battlechar as an animation, which you could then move around at will. Does anyone have experience with this?
(I guess I should mention this, I'm using 2k3, so I mean with the side-view battle system)

Don't worry, this is actually pretty easy:
Skills > > Animation (not battle animation, right next to it) > Set > Pose >
basically you make the animation of the sprite blank, but you make the battle animation for the skill itself involve the sprite hacking up the enemy or whatever you want.
This way, you can still have a general "Skill Use" pose but not make your game sucky.
