ROMANCING SAGA (AND THE SAGA SERIES!)
Posts

So I recently picked up Romancing SaGa, Minstrels Song, against the advice of every videogame reviewer ever. I'm glad to say as a longtime SaGa fan, I'm enjoying it immensely.
Is anyone into the SaGa games? Romancing SaGa, SaGa Frontier 1 and 2, and most recently, Minstrel's Song and Unlimited SaGa (which really was awful). The series usually gets a lot of flak, mainly on account that they're as unconventional as it gets as far as RPGs go.
Extremely nonlinear, (most of the plot is discovered by actually going out of discovering it), very technical gameplay that's complicated to the point of arcane (there are still people decoding SaGa Frontier's battle system), a metric fuckton of characters, who many of them have little to do with anything. This turns a lot of people off, but I find that this unconventional way to have a game definitely brings charm.
So anyone have any opinions on the series? (I expect a lot of you to say that you don't like it, but considering that this will probably be a common viewpoint, please elaborate on why.)
Saga Frontier 1, 2 and after are all prime examples of what is known as Fake Difficulty.

1. The outcome is not reasonably determined by the player's actions. Unlocking a door by solving a colour puzzle is real difficulty. Unlocking it by pressing a button until you get the right number is not.
2. Denial of information critical to progress. A reasonable game may require the player to use information, clues, or logic to proceed. Witholding relevant information means the player cannot possibly win without a guide or walkthrough.
3. Allowing the computer to perform actions which the player cannot perform under the same circumstances. This occurs when the computer is capable of doing things that not even the most skilled player would be capable of doing, such as getting money/items/techniques/etc. from absolutely nowhere.
I know what you're trying to say, but very rarely does SaGa Frontier 1 do these things. SF 2 pulls a few of these stunts a couple of times, though.
Hmm. What in the game specifically makes you feel they have Fake Difficulty?
I enjoyed SaGa Frontier 2 because of its artistic qualities. I really loved the backgrounds.

From what I remember of playing Romancing Saga 3 way back when my biggest issue with it is figuring out gameplay mechanics is painful. ID Break? It shoots an arrow and does... just damage? Feint? Oh boy zero damage and I have no idea what benefits it gives (assuming it even gives any)
I did buy the PS2 Romancing Saga recently due to a Youtube video of a fight with Scorn. I haven't gotten very far but the description text on the bottom describing what skills do deals with my biggest issue I remember from RS3. The style of the cutscenes helped too, and Tsuyoshi Sekito did some awesome music for the game.

Interestingly enough, that's what was the final straw for me to get the game as well. The cinematic and the music for that battle (Passionate Rhythm) is awesome.

I like SaGa games. They're entirely experimental affairs, and if the unconvential gameplay doesn't suit you the music and art style is always there to admire. SaGa arguably has some of the best videogame music out there.
Unfortunately I've never had the diligence to complete one of these bad boys. I own Unlimited Saga and Minstrel Song (which I thoroughly enjoyed till I got too overwhelmed and stopped playing for a while). I played a little of SaGa Frontier 2. The battle system was more than a little slow, but the story kept my interest. Not the mention the music and art, as WIP and Tau already said.

I'd go a bit further and say SaGa Frontier 2 has some of the best videogame music I've ever heard.

SaGa Frontier 2 was great until halfway through when they decided to do you know what.
I just realized that the gameboy Final Fantasy Legend games count as SaGa games, heh. Those were only games I played though. I barely remember them much, but they were one of my favourite RPGs.
Is it bad thing that I never ever heard of the Romancing Saga til I joined this community? I only played Saga Frontier for a total of an hour and didn't even come close to completing any of the stories and for Unlimited Saga I played at most 10 mins. Unlimited Saga is just... too weird to even start.
Let me tell you, for Romancing SaGa (PS2), the final boss with Saruin is epic as shit. Not only is the fight itself balls to the walls hard, but the atmosphere and build up gives that impression as well. When he raised his sword and the music starting playing, I was like; "Well...fuck."
I like that because the game effectively forces you to invest a lot of time in it if you ever want to beat it.

SaGa Frontier 2 was great until halfway through when they decided to do you know what.
The whole EGG subplot was poorly executed. Gustave was a much bigger (and more interesting) focus of the story... Then suddenly he dies.
Gustave is promptly replaced by a lame clone character, and later on "GUSTAF" who was his... great nephew, or some nonsense like that.
I haven't really played much of Saga Frontier 2, I only played a little of Gustave's story then I stopped.
I did however enjoy the 1st one very much, but they really could've done a lot more with some of the characters and villains of the game. (Plus hopin' Asellus would join Red in his story.) All of the final bosses were equally difficult... except for Red's.
I would always use Lute in every storyline too, since it feels like the game is sort of centered around him in a way, since he is available in every story. Plus you can raise him to be however you want him to be, making him in my opinion the best character in the game.
Now then, Romancing Saga 3, I played this one til' the end... but the final boss made quick work out of me since I was lacking the proper healing spells and items. But the game all around was pretty damn fun, it made me relive the Saga Frontier feel again, but holy crap this game is hard. I think it was because I was using the wrong characters in the game, some were developed pretty good while others not so much. Undine was my favorite though, pwned those enemeis with that Thunder Ball!
All in all, the Saga games seem to be ignored a lot nowadays. But I bet they ignore it because of the insane difficulty the games prove to be, but that's what makes it so much fun! PLAY THEM, I DEMAND YOU DO!!!!
Also Feldschlacht IV, lovin' all the SaGa characters on your avatar! XD

Blue is probably objectively the best character in the game.
Actually, the data divers decoded the rate of stat growth to each character, and Lute is actually the worst character in the game, having an incredibly low gain rate for every stat except Charm.
