CloseBoth of you used a game as a base to further modify or remake it? Granted, you went all the way with it, but both of you used a game that already exists as a template to make something based on it.

I think you see it as somewhat different, but you still catagorize the two in the same catagory, and the differences are enough for WIP to put them in different catagories. To say there is no difference would be silly though.
No, there is definitely a difference. I think it is mostly the former of what you're saying, though.
Umm, you're comparing a (difficulty) hack with a remake. Those things are a different kettle of fish.
This seems like a complete waste of time for anyone who isn't an obsessive fan of FFT. Kinda like all those Baldur's Gate 2 hard-as-hell mods.

Keep in mind; I wasn't so much comparing them fundamentally as I was addressing the originality point. Oh well.

I'm not trying to make a direct parallel. I'm just saying they're putting in the time and effort to make something that already exists (hence, not original) better, just like you did. If they turn the problems and not so great gameplay elements of FFT and make them awesome and fun for people to play with (and like I said before, I do hear it's really enjoyable) for FFT fans, than it's really similar enough, just on a different scale from what you did.
Like what I said before, no harm with making an original game even better than it was before. There's nothing wrong with a touch up or a modification.
They're creating a ROM hack, not a remake. There's quite a big difference between the two. Quite.

I suppose I am getting a lot of the ammunition for what I'm saying based on those old arguments for/against a FF7 remake. One of the most often said statements were very similar to what WIP said; "I think it sounds stupid. Put the effort into something original, please. I already played FF7."
That's what I wanted to address, not necessarily the difference between a remake or a mod.

I think my original point stands, Mog. This is just a difficulty hack, of which I don't find all that impressive. Yeah sure, you might not find much of a difference between what I have done and what they have done, but you are also boiling it down to an absurd level. Not to discount their work. Huge fans of FFT will probably love this.
But I still think it's stupid. ^_^

What FFT really needs is the FFT PSP translation in it. It sounds like they can do text changes (could be wrong) and FFT's translation is something from the ye olde days of the NES

I respect your opinion. And I didn't mean to lump what you and they did together as if it means nothing. However, I don't see it as just a mere difficulty hack (even though that's the end goal), when they're changing the gameplay elements, adding new jobs, new encounters, modifying the existing abilities heavily, etc etc. It's not as simple as giving everyone more HP or something.
But I respect your opinion all the same.

WIP, this hack is for people like my buddies and I, who spent far too much time leveling up characters, min-maxing, and then Pro Action Replaying the hell out of this game to modify or create our own classes. This particular game pretty much has its own modding cult following, like the original Half Life, or Diablo II, or Warcraft III. I think the increased difficulty just kinda came as a result of rebalancing all of the skills and creating new ones.
