NOOB QUESTION PLEASE HELP. "HOW DO I PLACE A CHARACTER SPRITE ON THE MAP IN RPGMAKERVX?

Hello. This is a crowning achievement for me. I have finally decided to make an RPG using this software. I may buy it, If I cannot finish my projected Idea in 30 days, that is. Now, as this is my first time scripting anything besides an HTML website, I have a few questions.
First, how do I place a character sprite on the map in RPG Maker VX?
Then, is there a way to have a skill work immediately when a battle begins?
This one I MAY have figured out, but it leads to my third question which is;
Can I make the chance that an attack will inflict a status change with each attack?
For instance, can I make a weak attack that will almost always stun, and then make a strong attack that has a lower chance of stun?
Or do I have to make a new status for the new attack?
Any help is much appreciated!
Looking forward to hear from you guys! :D
wow. Thank you for your kind words.
*sigh*
I looked there.
If I had any Idea what the help file was telling me to do I wouldn't be here asking for help.
Could someone else perhaps be a little more helpful?

1: You'll need to make an Event on the map and change the graphic to a character sprite (double click on the graphic in the event menu).
2: You can do this by setting a battle event under Troops in the database to run on Turn 0.
3: You will need to make two different stun effects, since status resistance is set in the monster database.
I highly suggest reading the entire help file even if it doesn't initially make sense. After you've done that spend some time experimenting and things will begin to fall into place.
Edit: On further inspection, the VX help file is quite worthless. Instead I suggest right clicking on many many things in the editor and selecting What's This? It will explain the function in detail.

Didn't mean to be a moron. Sorry.
How do I make a character sprite appear on the map?
What you wanna do is make an event by double clicking on the map and selecting new event. Then you can set its graphic to whatever you want. You can also set various behaviors and such.
Is there a way to make a skill work immediately when a battle begins?
Your battles can also have events..but not quite like map events. Battle events are "triggered". So you can have events that run when the hero has 50% hp left, or in your instance, you can have it run and perform the effect of the skill as soon as the battle begins.
Can I make attacks have status effects associated?
Absolutely. What you do is give the player's current weapon a status ailiment and give it a percentage (I think...) and you should be good. Although I'm not sure what you mean by "strong" and "weak" attacks. Are you talking critical hits?
FYI, all this advice is based on 2k3 experience and may or may not be relevant to VX. I hope I've helped.
EDIT: Dang, Silviera beat me to it. Anyways, I didn't mean to be a jerk, but there should be a lot less topics here. Not enough people really read through the help file.

Well thank you! See, its not so hard to be nice. :P
Anyway, you have answered my questions, for now.
I'll probably have more, so bear with me.
Thanks again!

also, another awesome thing in vx (and xp!) is the ability to right-click anything in the interface to see what it does! VERY helpful.
Well, I know most of what you guys are saying now, but I just have one more question that I have been stumped on since last night.
"Can I make a weapon that deals damage based on the Spirit stat?"
To, y'know, make a magical weapon?
If so I can't seem to figure out how.
In the meantime, I will go check the help file for the third time.
Oh and, sorry for snapping at you, relyt.
It was like 3 o'clock in the morning and I just wanted to get a start on my game.
But it's hard to figure stuff out on your own at 3 A.M. so... Yeah.
Anyway, awaiting an answer.
Peace!

That requires a little bit of rgss scripting
