Wikipedia
District 9 is a 2009 science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp, released August 13, 2009. It takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa. District 9 is based on Alive in Joburg, a short film directed by Neill Blomkamp, Sharlto Copley, Simon Hansen and Shanon Worley. The title and plot elements are influenced by the real-life District 6 in Cape Town. Copley also portrayed one of the interviewed policemen. The short film is about aliens landing in South Africa and becoming confined to a specific area and forced to work.
Anyone seen this movie yet, it's currently on 94% at Rotten Tomatoes with only 3 from 50 something bad reviews. Might be seeing tihs tonight so I'll elaborate a bit more once Ive seen this.
Awesome! I am eager to watch this movie. I saw the previews for it a few months ago. (I especially liked how it lead you on to thinking that it was about how a middle eastern group was being segregated).
The plot also follows this corporations attempt at using the alien weaponry (but can't) and a policeman/army guy who gets infected by an alien bioweapon.

I didn't want to mention that as it dies kinda spoil the movie a bit. This movie is indeed intriguing though.
This looks really awesome.
Not sure if I have the constitution to see it, though. There's apparently a lot of gore and screwed-up transformation sequences.

I haven't seen it yet, but I got that information from the website and one of the later trailers.
I can't wait to see this movie, really. It sucks that our theatres don't get movies until like 2 weeks after it comes out. :(
On a side note I can't believe that my friends think this looks stupid and cliche (Which is funny cause this really goes against the cliches in alien movies).

THIS WAS AWESOME.
I really liked the story, characters, action and presentation. It gelled very well.
One thing that bugged me, though, was that they never explained (or even suggested through those interview clips) why the aliens were stranded on earth in the first place. Did they crash? Were they refugees? Exiles? Cruise ship? I remember vaguely about them being miners or workers and for "some reason" all of the leaders were missing, but that's about it.
Oh well.

I figured Star Trek would take "best film of 2009."
Then I saw District 9. We have a new front-runner.

(spoilers possibly)
Uh...
the film was okay, well-acted too, but a lot of the scenes were very contrived and lacking in explanation. I think sometimes withholding an official explanation for an event in a story is artistically good, but in this case it didn't really have much merit.
I think that the first quarter of the movie is great, then the second quarter isn't as good, then the last half is a really lame and predictable action movie,

Going into this I had stayed away from as many spoilers as possible. The only thing I really knew was that the movie turned into an action-fest in the second half and that people didn't quite like that.
I, however, loved the action because it was just so goddamn badass! We had this character, which somehow reminded me of Murray from Flight of the Conchords and he was kicking ass in glorious action. You know like weapon after weapon. Testing all the shit and stuff blowing up all over the place. I was completely sold on it.
It's really been such a long time since I saw action done like that. I'm not sure what the rating of the film is but if the blood is anything to go by I don't think it's PG-13 like most recent action flicks are so the action sort of scratched that itch because you don't see that as much anymore.
It's also pretty awesome how real the aliens looked, especially considering the budget. I was convinced some of those aliens were not CGI. Though I assume they were.
Wow how did I miss this thread? Anyway I saw this movie awhile back, it was like Half Life 2 reversed almost. I don't know why you would complain about the action, at least it isn't overdone matrix shit, it reminded me of Half Life 2 and all these different factions screwing with each other and crazy gravity gun inspired gadgets everywhere.
Yeah best movie this year IMO.

It was very good at what it is; escapism. You were supposed to sit there and close your mind, and believe it. That way you could overlook the unexplained aspects of the film, and except it as a documentary on that infected guy. In that aspect I enjoyed it.
The action half didn't bother me either, since the weapons in it were so over-the-top awesome. That electro-gibb gun was kick ass.
I wouldn't call it movie of the year, but really, I forgot most of the movies this year already. So maybe it is.

I saw this movie off of a bootleg I got from someone. This was not that bad of a movie, although I wouldn't classify it as movie of the year, it was still good. The main character I hated till he actually pulls the Heel Face Turn and I actually grow to like him and his trust in the aliens. The ending really sets it up for a sequel but what would it be District 92, or District 10?
Oh, I forgot - one thing that was cool about this movie is that it made me think of how hilarious it would have been if one of those white supremacist bitches in apartheid South Africa had gotten a disease that turned their skin black, so they'd have to know what it was like to live like a black person. Hahahahahahha...
