HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR WORLD MAP?

Lately I like my maps small and condensed with great detail and slower walking speed. And instead of random battles, you just get randomly injured :).
I like World Maps that are similar to shining force or Legend of Mana.
Something like this:

Pokemon is nice though, it's exactly what I want to do with a world map.
I'm too lazy to run around a huge world map anymore...so something like point and click would do me fine. ^^
I like world maps with "hidden" area's. (see: Zelda II)
You are walking and accidentally happen to come across an area with some enemies and a bag of loot, and you're all, "Oh cool! What a pleasant surprise! I had no idea that was there!"

On being spherical and spinable, I wish Enterbrain put MODE7 style graphics in RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 so you could get your world map like that. The old SNES RPG Maker did it.

That was made in reference to this thing I cooked up (i.e. pointlessly wasted time on) for a community project.

Have fun recreating it in one of those RPG Makers.
Go fix your Java (or get hardware that supports OpenGl).

You also have to stay connected to the server because the country detail popups are loaded separately. (was supposed to be for faster updating)

Er... That's kind of getting off topic I guess.

So yeah, either spherical and spinable, or open world environments.
Wasn't there a way to have Mode7 world map's for XP? I thought I remembered seeing something on a site a long time ago.
I never really saw the point in the expansive FF style world map, there's never anything to do except walk in a straight line (and look for secrets at the end, I guess). I'm all for either a small world that's fully walkable like Zelda or some kind of instant travelling system, like train stations or something. Although to be honest it's such a minor part of most RPGs that I don't mind either way. But I would rather avoid the whole "seven towns = the entire world" thing!

EDIT: Also, Mario style map = awesome
I made my map to big for my game so now im gonna have to replace 3/4 of it with more water to fill the gaps in.

(Note to self never make world map 500x500 again!)

I just got an email this weekend from someone playing HR asking me if there was a 2D version of the world map, because the 3D one was kinda hard to use to know where to go in-game (ie- he was using the spinning globe as his reference map to play the game)
If said person had been keeping up with current technology and had a hologram projector hooked up to his computer he would have known how more efficient 3D is.

Er... That is to say people actually use that?
Nonexistent.

Expansive environments are where it's at.

I prefer networks of large, interconnected areas instead of world maps. I'm actually taking this approach with my second game (Carlsev Saga II); instead of a world map, cities and dungeons are connected by full-scale plains, mountain passes, and forests -- many of which with more than one exit. A "warp map" is a good idea for this format; otherwise, it would take forever to get places!
