MOST UNDERRATED AND OVERRATED RPGS

I'd have to group the entire Tales series as the most overrated. I've just never been able to finish a Tales game, mainly because it was either too predictable or unbalanced. I love the battle systems, but Star Ocean pulls off the same style just as well and with a more interesting setting to boot.

I'd say the most underrated RPG(s) is the Xenosaga trilogy. Although the battles are slow-paced, I never managed to get bored. The story is very interesting, and the music is top-notch. Voice acting is quite inconsistent and the overall length is lacking, but I just adore the brisk pacing and dramatic overtones.
I dunno. Final Fantasy is incredibly overrated., as is almost everything else square makes. (LOL OBV ANSWER). Especially FF6 & 7, I never saw anything special about 6 besides the greatest villain ever, and FF7 is well, generally overrated, but I do LOVE it.

Also, are Dragon Quest 2 & 3 underrated? If they are I guess that would be my pick. Also everybody seemed to hate Tales Of Legendia, but I loved it.
The most underrated RPG I would say is Okage: Shadow King. It's my favorite game of all time, must've played it three or four times. Kinda want to try for a fifth, it's been awhile.

Dunno about overrated. A lot of RPGs get unfairly lambasted, even popular ones. I'd say Final Fantasy III DS. People've said how difficult it is, but that's just because you have to grind like crazy. The job system is basic, most of the jobs aren't even very helpful either. Story is still dull, despite the spice added to it from the original. It's an NES game with the graphics of a DS game, little more.

As far as overrated goes, I'd say every Final Fantasy after FFVI. With the possible exception of FFVIII.

Underrated, I think the Lufia series is pretty underappreciated. I mean, I love Lufia, especially the one on Gameboy Colour. But I never find anyone who's heard of it unless I come on a community of folks well-versed in the genre (here).
Feel free to contest this with "BUT LUFIA ISN'T UNDERRATED." I know- people say it's great, but I feel it's underappreciated in that no one I talk to offline knows what it is. Maybe I need to get better friends.
For overrated I'd say that Baldur's Gate seems pretty overrated. Though people seem to be saying that it's the 2 that was great and that the first one wasn't. Still they always say Baldur's Gate and I couldn't think very highly of that game at all (in fact I didn't even bother with the second one).

For underrated I am not too sure. Temple of Elemental Evil is a pretty sweet game that doesn't get enough love in my opinion. (Though like all "underrated" games it seems everyone who tries it likes it) Once upon a time I would have put the rest of the Troika trilogy (Arcanum, Bloodlines) in underrated too but they're pretty popular nowadays methinks.

Oh, Oblivion and Fallout 3 are obviously overrated games. They're so overrated it's sickening to watch.
Fuck Fallout 3. In the ass. With a shovel.
For underrated, I was going to say Okage: Shadow King too. I had so much fun with that game.

Overrated....hmm, I'm not sure. Star Ocean 3, I guess. It received pretty high scores, but I thought it sucked hard. I didn't buy SO4 because of it, which is a shame, for I loved SO2 and still do.

holy jesus, you played that game!? I got pretty far, but it got to be SO hard to fnid some runes that I couldn't go on. great fun though, Darkstone always reminds me of it.

Okage: Shadow king was good, one of my fav's, but the battles were a little... iffy i guess. the real experience to be gained was fighting the urns. practically a guaranteed level up, one ONE enemy.

anyhoo, on to the topic at hand... Over rated? I guess some of the Shin Megami Tensei games. I mean, they look really interesting, but they just seem to be that only the hardest of the hardcore can hope to beat them, let alone RE-PLAY them to get all the endings. There's a difference between giving the player a challenge to overcome, and being a cruel bastard. What's the use of having great music/art/story if nobody can stand to play the whole thing?

Under rated... There are at once both so many to put here, and so few. Every game has it's fan base. But if you really had to push me, it'd be... Well, i'm tempted to say E.V.O. the search for Eden. great music, fun gameplay, action elements - CLASSIC SNES. But it has a huge fanbase.
If I had to pick a recent one, it'd be GrowLanser: Generations. not only was it two games for the price of one, but they had a fun new idea for battles, included more voice acting, even an auto battle so you don't get tired of the large maps! Just a fun bunch of games. sadly working designs is gone now, as well as any chance of reprints (especially needed for the lunar games) and i NEVER hear ANYONE talk about this game.
I really disliked the Lufia gameboy color game. To each their own though. I also heard bad things about the GBA game, which I didn't get around to buying. The SNES ones were good though.

Overrated: Xenosaga/gears. Personal hatred.

Underrated; 7th Saga/Brain Lord. I chose them not on some objective level, but because they're games I really like that are fairly unknown.
holy crap I got Temple of Elemental Evil at my dollar store! I haven't even opened it yet! I guess I should!

btw Nox is terribly underrated in my book.
I'm always nervous playing Growlanser: Generations because it feels like there'll be a hentai scene at any given moment.
I totally find Illusion of Gaia underrated. About 13 years ago I remember wanting to buy Toy Story (SNES), but my sister wanted Illusion of Gaia instead, and I always listened to her so I pretended I wanted it too. Still I'm very glad that I did.
On another note, I don't think anyone here can say they know how frustrating it is to get 49 of the red jewels and find out you missed the 50th one early on in the game. Fuck.

Also, Robotrek, since I'm talking about old Enix RPG's.
Illusion of Gaia was so amazing. Ridiculously dark for a SNES game aimed at and starring preteens. In fact a long time ago on an RPG Making forum I remember there was a long in-depth discussion on how dark it was.

Games ruled. I love them. Although that was before I knew the artist's history.

Yeah, after I played the game for a while, I had gone on to The Imageboard That Must Not Be Named and saw hentai in the same style, I was like, buh?

I would, friend. I would... At least the instruction booklet outlined where they all were. would have been killer without it.
I should give 2 a shot, I only remember playing 3. Hear Heritage of War was awful.

Another I've always found overrated. Chrono Trigger.
Please mercilessly flame me now, because I obviously can't appreciate what a beautiful, awe-inspiring experience Chrono Trigger is.

The writing is wooden, convoluted, and entirely confusing. While the gameplay is good, the story just doesn't really hold my interest any more. One of the reasons I've really only played through it twice, where as I've played through FFVI coming up 6 times now.
Keep in mind- I do actually like CT. I just don't like the writing. I think the story's pretty lame and full of tropes, too.
CT made me think of something...
In 600AD you have to leave Robo there because he has to plant all that trees. And you get him back in 1000AD. So why didn't Crono make an endless army of Robos?
I'm not sure what people who think Chrono Trigger is overrated were expecting.

I think the same reason why you dislike the story/writing is the the reason I like it, and dislike the stories in many new games. Different expectations and ideas of what makes a good game and whatnot.

The booklet only outlined where the first few were right? I think it stopped telling you stuff after the vampires, which is funny because most people reading it thought the game ended there (since the vampires were pretty difficult). At least this is what I understood from reading youtube comments.

What happens when you beat the vampires as Will...?

Anyway, I totally owned the booklet and the box and everything but my dad like the moron he is threw them out. Stupid adults think only the games are worth anything. I'd still have my Earthbound box if it weren't for that...
