I also missed them, imagine the surprise I got when I started getting Maxim magazines instead of EGM. Not a bad surprise but a little sad when I thought about it.
Also I must say this game looks pretty epic as the title states. I want this game. I do enjoy Kingdom Hearts, alot I think I am a big Kingdom Hearts fan. So yeah I happily admit half my brain is shot out. Also I think removing Disney from the formula would be disaster I mean I think we could live without Final Fantasy characters. Think about it, where do most of the worlds come from Disney... But then again it's the battle concept and design of FF mixed with the worlds and characters of Disney. An unusual but great match.

Kingdom Hearts is one of those games I thought I was enjoying while playing it, then slowly the realization crept up on me that it really, really sucked. Kinda like the Narnia movies.

But still I can totally see Scrooge, Donald, Huey, Dewey and Louie adventuring in a world like this. Mickey on the other hand. Not so much... He's so... traditional.
I'll disagree here. Mickey's got the bravado to face a challenge, he's not all smiles and 'hu hu' laughs. He's a tough character, cartoon-wise, moreso back in the day.
Now-a-days he just tells kids to do things, a la Dora the Explorer.
Donald on the other hand is a massive screw up, usually the butt of a joke, always getting pissed off, and a coward for the most part.
Goofy, he's just the butt of a joke. His tutorial How-To cartoons explain this in throves.
Mickey's like the only character in the usual Disney suspects to pull off a role like this. Plus, he's black. So he's got ethnicity working for him. :)
EDIT: from the story synopsis on Wiki, it sounds like Mickey is the only choice anyway.
