If you are looking for rpg maker itself, we can't provide you answers here. You best be searching through google.
You don't have to use RPGMaker but it is a very user friendly program. RMVX is probably the best for beginners like yourself.

But I thought here in the English speaking scene it is allowed to give download links?

Well if you've never worked with VX you can't really say for sure now can you? I have RM2k3 and VX and I would say VX. You can set up doors and chest events with one left click. Message boxes have preview buttons and arrows to show how much text you can fit with or without faces (Which are all done in the same command). Plus it's an official translation, so there's not confusion. There's even more I can say. But yes, you do have to pay for after the trial. I can tell by this guys posting style he'll go for 2003 anyway.
Also, no download links to anything that isn't XP or VX. I think linking to the RTP for any of the makers is okay though.

There's also a variety of makers that are freely available and legal. Look at this page for a list of those that are supported by RMN.

Self Switches are also a god send and a good early habit to get into. Sorry, VX is just easier.

Well if you've never worked with VX you can't really say for sure now can you?

Deacon Batista, face it. RMVX is more user friendly thank rm2k3. It even maps for you with auto tiles.

Don't open your mouth and criticize RMVX if you never touched it.
Anyways, Mario, try out RMVX if you are truly new to this scene. Its easy as pie and it'll make you all that and a bag of chips.

VX mapping is roughly the same as rm2k3 in terms of difficulty dude (in fact autotiles is a lot more newb friendly), I guess you didn't notice that the point I mentioned makes your mapping criticism invalid.
I am an rm2k3 user myself (well I am also using VX for a sideproject) but I think we need to direct the new people to more legit RM programs to let Enterbrain know that there's still a marketable interest for RM and eventually make an RM program that doesn't blow ass. Because let's face it, every RM has its flaws and it's just silly to promote some commonly pirated product to the newcomers.
It's not really the case of WHICH RM PROGRAM IS BETTER!?!?! but just getting with the times and keeping everything legit.
