A TOPIC ABOUT DRIVING.

Hey guys, I don't think I've seen a topic about driving here before. It's always been something I like talking about, I'm not so much into cars and I have no knowledge about them but I'm fine if the topic goes into that direction.

For my 17th birthday my mum paid for a bunch of my first driving lessons. I was never really bothered about it and I was going to wait before I started but since some were already paid for I went for it. I still remember my first lesson, I thought we were going to sit in the car while he explains a bunch of stuff and we'll move a bit in a straight line or something, nice and simple, no pressure. But no, he made me drive down this nice old country lane first to get me going and then we approached a round-a-bout. This was like my worst nightmare back then, I was actually sweating as I saw it in the distance. I told him there was no way I was gonna to do this, but he made me. Somehow we survived (probably because it wasn't busy ) and I felt on top of the world afterwards.

I probably had the best instructor ever. He was really mean, rude and shouted a me at lot for doing just little mistakes, but because he did that it made me focus more for fear of doing anything wrong. I would have hated a pansy instructor who would have just replied “Oh that's fiiiiiiiine honey” to everything.

I know some of you aren't old enough to drive yet, but please join in!

-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?

-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?
I do and I consider myself an average driver.

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
2000 Grand Prix 3.8L V6 and a 1993 Mercury Topaz 5-speed V6.

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
I was rearended so hard last october by some drunk crazy bitch that I was wedged under the car in front of me AND the car in front of me bumped the car in front of him.

I was also in a car that was clipped by a semi on the highway. I survived.

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
I took my lessons through highschool. I'm not sure how it works elsewhere but where I grew up we didn't have to pay for lessons. We had 6 classes. I got my learners when I was 15.

-How many times did it take you to pass?
I got it on the first try about a week after my 16th birthday. I drove a minivan (GMC Safari) for the test. Parallel parking was a bitch.

FUNNY ANECDOTES: I know a guy who passed his exam even though he ran a red light during it. The tester was writing in his notebook and wasn't paying attention. I also know a different guy who lost his license less than 45 mins after passing the exam due to some traffic violation (extreme speeding, I think).
I still have to take my drivers test. I turned 15 in April, but I still haven't been able to get over to the DMV and actually test for the stupid thing. It's mostly the form that I have to take to my school that I'm too lazy to take to the office. -___-
-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?
I'm probably not the best, but it's not hard to be better than average here.

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
I drive a rockin 2006 Ford Taurus with a tape deck and the cigarette lighters/ashtray pre-removed. I had a 99 Ranger (quarter ton pickup) before that and loved it to pieces, and before that two jeeps, which were awesome for putting around on the island I used to live on but here on the mainland I don't trust anyone not to slash open my vinyl doors and steal me booty.

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
I had zero accidents before I moved to Florida, in the almost 5 years since I have been here, I have been:

Rear ended while completely stopped at a red light; my head broke the rear window of my truck but the other driver's daddy was so damn thrilled I wouldn't be suing his kid that he replaced that and my bumper (the only other damage done) entirely at his own expense. What a champ.

Rear ended while paying at a toll booth (knee-jerk reaction to pull my arm back in the window saved me from snapping it that day). Other driver took off this time, headlight flopping around loosely in the breeze.

Hit head on by an 87 year old lady who ran a stop sign turning left directly in front of me (bye bye pickup truck). I was pretty dazed for a few minutes after this one but the other people on that road at the time were awesome, fished me out of my burning vehicle and called EMS. All I had to do was stand around being incredibly pissed off that my paid-for truck was gone just to save some idiot the trouble of looking before pulling out of her deed-restricted geezer farm. I even got a ride to class from the tow-truck driver, and showed up an hour and a half late with an accident report in hand and one hell of an excuse for tardiness.

Most recently, T-boned at low speed by a drunk driver. I was driving my friends and I home from a bar and a cop there was tailing me to make sure I wasn't drunk. He wound up catching the accident right on his dashboard camera, bad news for the guilty party since it was his 3rd DUI in 8 years and he's currently living the high life in prison. He was stopped at a stop sign, I was making a left turn onto the road he was on, our eyes met, he jumped forward and screwed up my drivers' side doors. Pretty sucky way to lose your freedom imo!

People in Florida talk much the same shit about their incompetent drivers as people anywhere else, but in all seriousness, it is worse here than anywhere else I have ever been. Fortunately I was easily found not at fault for all of these incidents and was never hurt beyond a few bruises but the risk is always there :\ drive defensively and buckle up guys

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
I took drivers' ed at school and got my permit at 15, pretty sure this is how it usually goes in the states, but I'm not sure.

-How many times did it take you to pass?
I failed my first test right at the end because I got sick of Officer Hardass barking at me and told him that while I understood he was really getting off on yelling at me and I hated to deprive him of that, it was really fucking distracting to someone trying to drive. I took the test again three days later with a trooper that happened to be a close friend of my dad. We did the required test maneuvers, then stopped for pancakes. He even tipped me off to a vehicle his neighbor was selling that turned out to be my first ride <3
I am actually really fucking lazy and don't have my license. It isn't because I'm afraid of getting it or anything, I've just never been able to afford driving lessons on my own, and my mother pretty much never has the time to teach me herself! I should work on getting it.
-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?
Yep. I'm a decent driver. Better than most 16-year-olds, though that's not saying much. >_>

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
A blue Honda CR-V

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
I almost got into an accident at this fork in the road. I was heading straight and the guy opposite me just made a left turn. Then as I'm about to enter the middle of the intersection the car behind the guy that just turned all of a sudden starts going. Being awesome and quick-thinking, I stopped immediately. They completely their turn, and I shrugged and moved on. Cars go over 60 MPH through the intersection I was in the middle of.

Also there was this one time I was driving in a parking lot and made a right turn. An old lady was on the left side of the street, but she had stopped long enough to signify that she was letting me go first. I have to maneuver around her so as to finish my turn and get back in the right lane, and the whole time she just gives me this evil "What the fuck are you doing?" look. I thought I did something wrong. It wasn't until I got home that I realized she was on the wrong goddamn side.

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
Yep, summer course at my high school.

-How many times did it take you to pass?
Once. The guy said he shouldn't have passed me because I parked poorly at the end (which wasn't my fault it bears mentioning. He says "aaand park" but doesn't point out where. So I'm driving to a far off spot and he yells at me to break because the spot I was supposed to park in I just drove by.), but he passed me regardless.

Going to same with blind here. But when I think about it more, I realize I really need to get a scooter, not some xbox huge fat car.

-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?
I would like to think I'm a good driver. I've yet to be in an accident or recieve a single ticket. But it's only been about a year since I've gotten my full class five (No limitations)
-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
A Ford Escort 1999 Zx2

This little beast is powered by a 4 cylinder 130 horsepower engine and is so damn light that this thing gets amazing MPG. It's the car I use to travel and get around the city in. (It's also a standard)
I also have 2008 Ford Ranger 4x4 that I bought when I was working at local ford dealership in squamish.

It's a nice little truck and is automatic. (The one I have is White on black) But it doesn't see as much use anymore since I'm living in Vancouver now.
I used to own a Porche 944 aswell. (Cheap man's porche only worth about 7000 dollars.) But I sold it to my dad because he needed a new car project to work on.
-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
Got rear ended by a mom in a dodge caravan once while I was driving my truck. Nothing more a single scratch on my truck when her headlight had been smashed in and the one sized had a pretty nice dent in it. I let her off with giving me 20 dollars to pay for the touch up paint and let her go on her way. She thought I was a fucking saint.
-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
My parents bought me driving lessons for my 16th birthday.
-How many times did it take you to pass?
5. I always failed on shoulder checks.
Man, ken, you need to get a better car for your baby to roll in.

-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?
Nope. I am a good driver, though. I don't have my license because I am stupid and lazy.

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
If I got my license I would suddenly find myself the owner of a 2004 Subaru Forrester, in silver. I love it.

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
While doing driving lessons, I asked my instructor to tell me when to turn on a weird very long curve. If I hadn't, I would have turned, but as it stood a garbage truck nearly smashed into us. Thanks, driving instructor, for saying nothing. Also, I pulled out into traffic about a hundred meters in front of a van moving at a very fast clip, which caused my driving instructor to nearly have a heart attack (even though I made it in space and just accelerated to match traffic and nothing bad happened, he was a shitty instructor).

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
I paid for part, they paid for part.

-How many times did it take you to pass?
I haven't, yet, although I did my G1 (which is like a useless learner's permit) on the first try!
-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?
Yes, had my license since high school. Currently working on mastering manual transmission and working on my motorcycle license. If we're comparing my driving skills to my friends, then I really have no problem saying I am the best driver out of the lot, because some of my friends can't drive for shit. Objectively though, I'd say I'm average/pretty good, because sitting next to my dad while he drives is a humbling experience.

He's the best driver I know, drives all around the country, and can pull some crazy ass shit as in driving really fast without getting anyone killed/crazy maneuvers/TOKYO DRIFTesque shit. He attributes it to -get this- he says that his father, my grandfather, did some amateur race driving in his youth. I'd think he's full of shit if it wasn't for the fact that my uncles and other older members in my family often verify his stories about late gramps.

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
Silver 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's alright.

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
No accidents as of yet, but I've almost gotten myself killed a few times back when I was learning how to drive. Also I remember bumping into an old lady. No damage though.

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
Nah, never had any lessons. My mother, uncle, and dad taught me how to drive.

-How many times did it take you to pass?
Three, because I was a pretty reckless driver in high school and fuck parallel parking. It's pretty easy now, though.
Driving tests difficulty must vary a lot place to place. I didn't take any lessons and passed both the written and driving test perfectly the first try after literally driving for 30 minutes or so in the countryside with my dad. (stick was a little harder to figure out but I did the test in an automatic) I actually don't even know a single person in real life that has failed a driving test before. Might just be a Kansas thing. It's redneck heaven here with all the farmers, so it's actually unusual for a lot of kids to have zero experience in operating some sort of big ass vehicle with an engine by the time they're 15/16.

I was on a business trip in New Orleans a few years ago and had a rental car. Down in the French Quarter/Bourbon Street area there are roads that were built basically in the late 1700's and are way too small to fit cars on but they try anyway. I have never done anything more challenging than trying to parallel park on those tiny roads.

-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?
I'm a very good driver. I know this because I was taught by my father, who has been in the car business his entire life. Oh, and he used to race.
-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
My folks' old 2003 Mazda 6 at present. It has a shittonne (lolmetric) of miles on it though, so I'm looking at getting a reasonable used Protoge 5 to replace it.
-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
I hit a deer driving to rehearsal the other day. That's the first time I've ever hit anything. Scared the living shit out of me. That said, the deer wasn't lying in a crumpled heap in its own guts behind the car, so I'm assuming it was either okay, or okay enough to limp away and die in the ditch or something.
The damage to my front end and driver's-side door is just another reason I really need a new car.
-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
My folks paid for lessons for me, yes. I went to driver's ed. My teacher was an awesome dude named Sergeant Dan Beste. He was a total badass older dude who told us horrifyingly manly stories about his antics as a police officer. Seriously, that dude is my fucking hero. He's another reason I'm as good a driver as I am now.
-How many times did it take you to pass?
One, baby. :D
-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?

I do. But what would be a good driver?

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.

A BMW 320i with 6 cylinder and 170 HP. I really love that thing. @_@

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?

No accidents, what a luck. My first car was a Citroen ZX, the motor crashed itself, that was anything bad to me.

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?

Nope, I was working for my licence.

-How many times did it take you to pass?

I made two licences, one for a motorbike when I was 16, and the other one for car when I was 18. Both passed at the first time. =3
Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?
I drive. I am a bad driver, because people driving with me are always scared. The whole car is shakin all the time when I drive, but that's the way I like it. I don't care if it is healthy for the car. I just use the car the way I feel comportable and confident with.

What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
I don't have my own, because fuel is way too expensive here.

Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
No. That's the irony about it. I even drove when the traffic light showed red a few times (inadvertantly of course) and often where THAT NEAR to have an accident, but all the good drivers I know already HAD accidents or anything so far. He he. ^_^

Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
My father paid all the stuff. I had enough money to pay it on my own, but why should I?

How many times did it take you to pass?
One try only. :-3 Although it was very close, cause I decided to pass 3 big trucks and 1 normal car when I was 1 kilometre away from the highway's exit I had to take. Wanted to make the whole thing more thrilling. X,-D

Whatchu talking about? The Grand Prix is a pimpin' land yatch fully loaded (and fully paid for).

The Topaz is a little beast, too, with that V6. The little guy has over 330,000 KMs and is still chugging away!

Currently (supposed to be) learning to drive. My instructor has a tendency to make up stupid excuses whenever I'm supposed to be taught, though, so I've had only 8 lessons spread out in like 2 months and as a result I am useless at driving. This Wednesday he wasn't available for the scheduled lesson because he "JUST came back from holiday in Italy". Before that he drove the car into the kerb and punctured a tyre...half an hour before my lesson. :(

This is why I'll never pay by cheque again..I'm also thinking about learning to drive automatic cars for now, because of how agonisingly slow the learning process is turning out to be (I'm just not very good at...physical things), but I don't want to be made fun of every time I hit the road.
Also as an aside, do any of you like driving? Before I got my license, everyone told me that driving is one of those things that's fun at first but quickly gets tedious, but I never get tired of it! I love driving, especially if it's just me and my dog; it's a very 'zen' experience.

One hand on the wheel, some good music playing, a sunny day, that sort of thing. I especially love 'exploring' where I drive instead of just going the same route when I go to the store/etc. It's cool to know 7 ways how to get to a place when everyone else just know the main road or whatever, and it's pretty handy when you have to take a shortcut, go around a roadblock, or coming from an unfamiliar place!
-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?
I learned not to long ago..I've got the hang of it so far. I'll find out the next time I crash -_-

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
' 98 Toyota 4runner SUV (yay I think it's the oldest car so far). With these grille/tail light guards and military stickers. Very manly car ._. I didn't put the stickers on.

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
I crashed into my mom's office when I first started out. Got a major ass-whooping ; haven't hit anything since.

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
I'm lucky!!

-How many times did it take you to pass?
Taking it pretty soon...I'll find out :]
-Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?

Yes. I am a decent driver that does not get into accidents. I think most people are this way.

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.

I drive a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo. It is an ultra-compact hatchback. I would prefer a Smart, but the resell is way too high for me to afford.

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?

I hit a deer a month or two ago. This is often unavoidable in the forested areas of the midwest. I was driving a junker at the time and did not have collision or comprehensive insurance. This event is responsible for my now driving a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo.

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?

Yes. I am surprised my mother did pay for it because she did not have much money at the time.

-How many times did it take you to pass?

Once. I had the lowest possible score one can get without failing, but I had experienced a mild concussion earlier that day.

Yes and yes.

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
2001 maroon Ford Taurus named Kyle.

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
My door is slightly dented from a concrete pole due to my mother and my front-left bumper is cracked from a telephone pole last winter when I hit some black ice. Thankfully, that was the worst of it except that my nerves were twitchy for a week. The only time I've ever been pulled over (not that they've ever had a chance; I don't drink/smoke/do drugs or speed) was three weeks ago when my plate light was out. Defect card gogogo! =P

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that paid for your lessons?
My parents paid, and my grandfather bought me the car.

-How many times did it take you to pass?
I passed the first time with flying colors.
