MOST RM games haven't got a selling point, because even though you say 'I have story! I have graphics! I have CMS DBS ZTS PMS ADD!' when you put it up there, ultimately it looks and feels the same as the next game with a supposedly different selling feature.
The same can be said for a lot of games, period, it seems.

Inspired by this post in the stalemated Selling Feature topic, I'd like to do a quick field study-

What are your favorite games, and what inspired you to pick them up and try them in the first place? Not what you like about them, having played them through already- unless that happens to be the same thing- but why did it ever catch your eye to begin with?
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is my favorite game ever, but I bought the game and the guide on a whim (the only time a blind buy has ever worked for me). Something about the game's cover lured me to it... I haven't quite seen anything like it. I enjoyed the artwork and I looked through the guide, and the game just seemed different and interesting. I didn't know what to expect when I started playing it, but I definitely knew that, at the absolutely very least, even if it did suck, it wasn't going to be the same old bullshit.

Interestingly, I didn't really like it at first. I thought it moved too slow and a lot of the plot points just went way over my head. I was playing both P2 and Lunar 2 at the same time, I found found Lunar to be much more accessible and better. Well, eight years later I still have and love P2, whereas I gave away Lunar 2 at the end of my 8th grade year..........

As far as epic first impressions go, I still remember the first time I booted up Majora's Mask. I was so fucking excited, and I'd been drooling over the then-awesome fake-3D cartridge for a while. I put that shit in, and the opening sequence where Link is riding Epona through the woods just blew my mind. I was like "Wow, this is incredible. It looks real."
The gameplay itself blew me away. I sunk hundreds of hours into that game to get 100% completion. Then I replayed it something like 4 times. By the fourth time, I could pretty much do each dungeon and boss fight in my sleep.
Out of the whole game though, probably the coolest scene was the one in the Clock Tower where the Happy Mask Salesman SUDDENLY HAD A MASSIVE PIPE ORGAN AND PLAYED IT. He was such a cool character anyway, but DAMN. BAD. FUCKING. ASS.
Terranigma. Amazing plot, fun, yet challenging gameplay, good graphics, great soudntrack...
Majora's Mask. Basically what tardis said, I fucking love this game.
Okami. Graphics and gameplay blew me away. INSTANTLY hooked.
Earthbound. Once I heard the theme song of Onett... <3 <3 <3 <3 <3.
Golden Sun. The graphics blew me away, as well as the gameplay: psyenergy puzzles, djinni, etc. Also really gcool soundtrack.
Cave Story. I love platformers, I love this game. Plot, graphics, gameplay, all very much love, as well as the AMAZING soundtrack.
FF6. A bit generic, but the music in Narshe got me hooked.

Music is a really big thing in games for me.
The opening cinematic of Arcanum had such badassery that it was impossible not to be excited about the game:

Of course that was not why I picked up the game. I picked up the game because of a couple of reviews and then finally seeing the game in a bargain bin. (though even there the box art made me go "whoho")

Looking at my game collection I see that the major selling feature of any unknown game I've bought has been price. For example my first Total War game I bought in a 3 for 2 (where the other 2 were my main choices but Total War ended up being my favorite). I've bought maybe three games for full price and they've all been either sequels or developed by people I trust. (Vampire Bloodlines, Empire Total War, The Orange Box)
