CAMEOS

How tolerant are you guys to cameos in games. For example I have a battle arena in chapter two of my game and I was thinking after you were the grand champion. You could get the choice to fight Sora from kingdom hearts or link from Zelda or something along those lines. Just sort of as a bonus. I did not want to do this however if the general consensus was that this would be bad.
I don't want to see Zelda or Tidus or Zidane in your game. It makes me think you're ten years old, and it makes me shut your game of.
That said,
Wanderer is in Speak No Evil, and Alex appears in V&V. I guess I'm a stickler for creative consent.

Depends, if your making a Final Fantasy Fan Game I "might" expect Cloud or something if you going to add a cameo. But, if you add like Sonic or The Hulk in a FF game people will might think its a joke game and make people go WTH?!11!1!!
Personally, it all depends on who the cameos are and whether you can do them enough justice in their portrayal. A poorly done cameo is at best a turn-off, and at worst an insult to the character(s) in question; a brilliantly executed cameo, on the other hand, can bring manly tears.

Alex and the Unspeakables, get it right! I wanted the fight to sound like an 80s band. XD
I've had cameos in my games before, but nobody plays those anyway but that's just my personal choice. It definitely turns people off sometimes, but like King Arthur said, a well-done cameo can be amazing. It helps if the setting makes sense for the character or if they have a reason for being there.
I'd say that if you're doing a game you want people to take seriously(and set on having a cameo), make the cameo subtle. Like in xenogears when Lucca made an appearance, that was a nice surprise instead of a ruinary(i think i made up that word) moment.
If it's a game made out of cameos people are immediately turned off for obvious reasons. Noone wants to play a game that's made out of other games characters unless it's amazing. Or a fighter.
Too many cameos can destroy any kind of atmosphere you wanted for that game.

I hate ruinary moments.
If you feel adding a cameo will improve your game, do it. That's my general rule.

Don't make it a cameo, make it a homage. Have a guy in green who throws boomerangs and bombs or something and call him Lunk! People love those!

Right good advice everyone. I was not going make the cameo super strong or anything. I like GreatRedSpirit's idea and might do something along those lines. My game is defiantly not a fan game. So maybe it's best to keep it that way. Lol

The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.
You... did a very poor job, Senor Catan.

That was a homage, monsieur.
hm, most of my cameos are from rm*/indie games like Pan, Amelia, Gunnar & Kell and stuff, oh and some touhou characters, I never put commercial :p
If I was putting a cameo, I'd do it with characters/items from preexisting games that I made, or another indie game, but not something from a commercial game.
Cameos are fine, I think the key is to make it subtle. It should serve more of a purpose of a humorous easter egg than an element to the game itself.

Small cameos only. Like appearances as Boss Battles. You are not Square-Soft, Namco or whatever other decent company. You would be unable to portray the character properly. I've played RM games with cameo appearances before and the creator is too interested in shoving them in the game they don't do anything with them. "Wheeee I'm Cloud. I'm joining the party. Wheeee!". Cameos from other RM games is fine, I wouldn't even recognise them.
Whether a cameo is a good or bad idea is directly proportional to your creativity and your cleverness.
