RM2K3 ON WINDOWS 7: SLIGHT CHOPPINESS

Posts

Pages: first 12 next last
I recently am trying Windows 7 again. Thankfully; most of the problems Ive had previously SEEM to have been fixed (though I may be speaking too soon).

There is still one issue I'm having, and thats with Rm2k3.

Everytime I go to play a game (Naturally in windowed mode), the game is choppy. Not unplayably choppy; but slightly choppy and a bit annoying.

Does this happen to anyone else, and does anyone have a solution for this?
I haven't had that particular problem, but every problem I have had with Rm2k3 in Vista/Windows 7 was a UAC/permission thing. I had huge lag in the editor, and it was because it had a lot of trouble accessing graphics files and such. Once I turned all that off and granted full access permission to my rm2k3 folder, everything worked much better. Don't remember if there was any lag in play though, so I dunno if that helps.
I've always had RM2/K3 jitter around and lag a bit in windowed mode. Press F5 to single the resolution and that will help.

It doesn't, even at it's smallest it acts exactly the same.
That's weird. I gave up on RPG Maker 2003 though since it seems to hate newer versions of windows. I kind of like the European model game engines a bit better for them having insane compatibility ranges (lots of them run as well on Windows 95 as they do Windows 7 and require only DirectX!). EmptyBrain seems to produce lots of twitchy engines, though they have gotten a bit better over the times.
I always use full screen, and don't get any lag.My monitor is the size of a small plasma though....
Rm2k3 runs choppy in Windowed mode on my (old) PC at home running Windows XP. It runs smooth in fullscreen. At work it runs smoothly in windowed mode (also XP) but that machine is 10x better.

So I don't think it has anything to do specifically with Windows. My guess is Windows 7 is such a hog that it causes the shitty RM code to run choppy, and there probably isn't much you can do about it.

I just turn UAC off.

I don't seem to have that issue with Windows 7 with Rm2K3 thusfar ...
Win 7/Vista use a different graphics driver model than XP that's designed for newer games, so every game you used to play on XP will feel a bit different in Vista/7 unless a really good driver is written.

I'd take a picture of how that would look on my new 24" monitor, but my camera has been missing it's battery since the silent era... Suffice to say, the Samsung T240HD does not do RM2k3's tiny resolution very well.

By UAC, do you mean that nagging that pops up every time you try to do ANYTHING?

Couldn't have put it more beautifully. Yes, that's UAC.
The first thing I do when I install a new version of windows is I turn the UAC notifications off. The second thing I do is I set the theme to Windows Classic (Win 95 style).

Slightly offtopic, but didn't they remove the Windows Classic theme in Windows 7, Wolf?
Have you done the standard directx and graphics driver update? This is my only guess to the solution.

Mine runs fine on W7 too.

Well I just installed Windows 7, so I assume I have the latest version of direct X.

They have not. There's even some pre-made 95-ish themes you can select from the personalization page including those high contrast themes made to help if you have a problem with seeing things normally.

I love it more than any other theme Microsoft has ever made, it's simple, it runs much faster and the windows feel more responsive. And it uses much less battery power on laptops.

Not only they have it in Windows 7, the Super Taskbar still works just as it did, jumplists, switching and all. It's kind of weird to see something that looks like 95 but handles like 7.

That's great to hear. I remember reading somewhere about Microsoft going "we need to move on (from the Win95 GUI)" about the GUI, so I dreaded the day I have to upgrade to Windows 7 and say farewell to the classic Windows GUI that has been with us for so long. ;_;
this GUI is still extremely similar you know

a few alpha channels can't fool me
Yeah but I'm tired of waiting for it to finish dancing around my screen. The see-through doesn't really show much more either.

Yeah, I find it annoying too. Like that pointless animations that make everything feel sluggish. I turned them all off... Though I didn't go as far as turning on Windows Classic mode.
