I just finished waiting 5 hours on a 10kb/s connection to upload a 56MB file to RMN. I know upload speed is largely dependant on your internet speed but are there any tricks anyone knows of to make your files upload just a tad faster? Is it faster in a particular browser or at a certain time of day etc...?

What is your internet speed? Mine is only 10kb/s keep in mind. It takes me about an hour to download a 100MB file.
ah. I don't even pay attention to that anymore since I've always had a good connection. It takes <5~10mins to download 100MB usually.

Make sure you aren't clogging your tubes with other Internet activity. Stuff like Bittorrent will eat at your transfer speeds if it is doing a ton of uploading.
On the other hand, Australian Internet. I've heard only bad things about it so I don't know how much you can do

I normally just upload and then maybe browse a few forums while it's happening. That's all.

McDonald's down the street just got WiFi up probably 6 months ago - it's usually down, but when it's not it does better than 10kb/s. o.O I thought I read quite some time ago Australia was getting Nationwide fiber or something?

It was actually a free Metamucil sample mailed to all residents.
10kb/s is REALLY SLOW. Especially if you are trying to upload a 55MB file. By my nerd calculations, that should have taken you approximately 12.2 hours to upload.

Well, I mean in this area of Australia this is as fast as we can get. And yes, we're getting the National Broadband Network which is a double edged sword as it's very fast yet administrated by the government, who were at one stage talking about putting filters up.
talking? I thought they have already erected the filters to remove anything more offensive than SpongeBob Squarepants?

Nah, they trialed it in a few places (voluntary trials) but they took them down as they ended up causing problems with download speeds and firewalls etc.
They haven't spoken of them since, but I don't trust our government. They seem to view videogames and the internet as the roots of all evil. Actually makes our country seem rather totalitarian and restrictive, but we're really not like that at all.
EDIT: China on the other hand has nasty filters.

post=119634You sure? I get 2MB/s (well, that's what I'm supposed to be getting, but the highest I've had it was 900+kb/s) and I'm in VIC. 'Course I got ADSL2 and a fairly new computer, so that may be why...

There'd probably be a riot or something if they did try to sneak those filters past the public. Most Aussies I know get a bit riled up if they feel their freedom is being repressed. XP
Helps that we just vote out the nutsos every couple of years if we hate them enough - though we never really have a great batch of pollies to choose from, do we?

Nope. Last time it was Rudd or Howard. Both choices were bad ones...
Anyway, I live in rural area (in Vic) so our best ADSL plan is meant to be 30kb/s but I have only managed to get that speed once.
