EVIL

Posts

Heh my RE lesson last week was on this topic, one of the "Ultimate Questions" (Yeah, exciting, so damn glad it's only one lesson a week) Personally, I'm taking an approach that say's that it's mostly what people perceive. Mostly though I'd say it'll be the act that's more evil than the person, Yeah you can label some acts as being 'Evil' for instance, killing someone, which for most purposes it is, yet when armies kill Terrorists and such, it's thought of as doing something good for some people.
There are some acts that would pretty much fall under the 'Evil' category, whoever committed it, but for many it's mostly a matter of what people's perception's of it is.
I have no objections to the current discussion, but I wish more people would answer to the 3 questions, though.
Haha I neglected to answer 'cause I was finding it preeeetty damn hard to answer

1) What was the most evil thing you have ever done?
--Probably the amount of times I've kicked/punched/knee'd/etc my brother where it hurts the most. Rather hilarious last time though, he was laughing at it aswell!
2) What was the most evil thing ever done to you?
--Fairly tough to answer, but I'd say that it was a couple of morons from round my end giving me a black eye, just 'cause I stopped the younger beating up my brother.
3) What was the most evil thing ever done?
--Darn this one's tough as hell, 'cause I can see both sides to most of the 'Evil' acts. If anything I'd say the holocaust, 'cause no matter who'd commited it, it'd still be damn well evil to go through with.
except that he rallied an entire nation, established an economic super-power vanquished his political enemies and almost conquered europe which is pretty impressive considering his radical political ideas, suffering from post-war trauma and having really stupid allies in the war

the disasterous combination of scintillating politician, tremendously awful ideals strikes again
hey, what'd you expect, really?

human beings are a good definition of evil.

Very true; you've hit the nail on the head.

human beings are a good definition of evil.
this is a huge fallacy as by its nature evil must be defined in human terms

but we are steering dangerously close to the sirens of arguments on sentience
1. Nearly killed someone for attacking me.
2. Stabbed in the back with a dagger.
3. The invention of the apple.

let's see

someone tried to assassinate the prince with a poisoned apple
that didn't work so they stabbed him in the back while he wasn't looking
that didn't work because the prince turned around and stabbed back
... I'm surprised that you could read into the event so well. Everything but the poisoned apple did happen when I was 19. Bravo, you get a medal.

It also means it is us who have created the whole thing.
It really low-balls all of humanity to have World Peace be a separate entity we must strive for. Shouldn't we have this already?
Hell I'd even settle for Local Peace at this point :D
@ uh: Amen to that. Growing up in a ghetto of Miami, I could never understand how people could be so needlessly ruthless, seemingly on the sole basis that it's cool to be cruel (rhymes? :p).

Which leads me to my next point. I'm trying to understand myself whether evil is at all separate from mindless or inconsideration. From my perspective, my definition of evil is ideals and actions that go against the grain of those around the subject. Therefore evil is a subjective term that varies from person to person, city to city, country to country. On each level (or tier I 'spose you could say), there are common views on right and wrongs with ultimately each individual tailoring common views to themselves and deviating only slightly.

Going in the same vein with that, inconsideration is vastly taken lightly. From my perspective, anything is good until you interfere with another person's free will to enjoy their life peaceful, then it becomes some sort of evil act (in a sense).

So, take murder for example. If you like to murder for fun, well that could generally be considered an evil act because you are interfering with someone else free will to enjoy life, in fact ending it altogether. Revenge may be a different story, but I believe it should garner a high value in escalation of force. For example, if you kill someone I loved (or tried to kill me) just for fun, I will kill you no questions asked, one way or another. However, if you accidentally killed someone I loved, by say, running them over, then I will have no hard feelings and we will drink away our sadness at the bar together.

The problem with this is that there are many people that can't use any judgment, restraint, or discipline in the given situation and would kill someone for little reason with weak justification. And thus we have a law to govern that for them, though it has to be implemented across the board, for everyone. Especially considering loopholes in the legal system, the concept of evil has to be plainly written out to appeal to the general consensus.

Finally, to tie my point altogether (and sorry for the excessive rambling): If, say, in a game that has little to no governing over a kingdom, or areas that are lawless, the concept of evil and what is socially accepted should differ from one that is highly secure and governed, as is the case in the real world. In the US, it would not be okay to kill someone for revenge, but in a 3rd world country, this could be fair game. In some places, they will cut your hand off merely for stealing, which is ok there, not so much here because it would be considered cruel (aka evil) and inhumane.

P.S. Sorry for not answering your 3 questions. I can't think of anything evil (by my standards I suppose) that I have done. Still thinking of evil acts bestowed on me, so far being shot at and needlessly jumped comes to mind.
I can only answer the most evil thing ever. Hitler is the #1 most evil ever. F*** YOU HITLER!

No he wasn't.
stirring the pot here..

The truth is, right and wrong are entirely relative to societal norms. And "truth" is entirely dependent on what we can see and understand. There was a time when people thought diarrhea and seizures were evil.

Furthermore, free will is an illusion of human automaticity. Everything that happens had to happen. If it can happen, it will happen. No one thing that has happened could have been prevented. No one choice that was ever made could've been any other choice. Those not aware of this are doomed to suffer disappointment and resentment for their lives for as long as they exist. Those who are aware of this are able to exist in harmony with their surroundings. We can't change what will happen, we can only train ourselves to react to what may come peacefully.

There is harmony and discord, positive and negative, yin and yang... both opposing forces entirely necessary for balance to be contained.

tl;dr: there is no good and evil. you are now breathing manually.
