WHAT OTHER RM GAMES HAVE INSPIRED YOUR PROJECTS?

Sunset Over Imdahl and Grave Spirit got me into thinking of more original ideas rather then the overused conventions that I had currently held. Also Faroz Flare in terms of maps.
Muse inspires itself.
to put it into better words:

Velsarbor inspired me. That's pretty much it. If the topic were about commercial games on the other hand...
Games with great overall presentation and attention to detail, with that extra element of originality (in graphics, gameplay, setting, etc). And that are similar enough to my own game to inspire me to work on it.
Starless Umbra,
Evania: Secret of the Reza,
Rise of the Third Power,
DE's Solstice DBS demo (though part of it is basically Romancing Saga 3's battle system, I liked all the little details),
Dhux's Scar,
Rose Chronicle,
and some unfinished game (tentatively?) called Space Opera that had a bunch of screens on GW a few years back and not much else to its name. To tell the truth, I have a whole folder dedicated to inspiring screens of RM games, 90% of which were never actually released...
Sunset Over Imdahl is one of my favorite RM games ever, but for some reason it never "inspired" me.

Wilfred the Hero inspired me to make a game just because of how purely awesome it was.
I can't remember the name of the game, but it was about a guy and girl who kidnap a princess and run off to a sewer with her. It had talent trees (ala WoW) and the characters generated MP using a WoW-like system. One character regained MP every few turns (energy), one when he attacked (rage) and one just ran out like normal (mana).
I took the energy system and adapted it to my own game (a copy of a copy?) You start every battle with full MP, you have low max MP, but it regenerates a little every turn, so you can cast spells every couple of turns but not back-to-back. I liked it because it encourages you to use spells in every battle (which is always more fun than spamming attack) but you have to try and predict when you'll need that MP to cast a heal, otherwise you'll be stuck half-dead for a couple of turns.
The plot itself is a mix of several RPGs including any RM game where you fight an evil corporation or entity. It starts off as a "reverse-FF7" deal, because I always wondered what it would be like to run Shinra.

I must say one of my original and strongest inspirations was The Frozen World. I never realized how simple yet incredibly fun a custom battle system could be. Using tiles was a great way to cross the hurdle of creating an entire menu interface to control the customized system.
Also, it's a great game in general! :D
slashphoenix: that sounds awesome.

post=150015Holy shit I have a folder just like this, heaps of screenshots of unfinished, or released games that have awesome screenshots. It's nice to look on them from time to time.. Some examples.
To tell the truth, I have a whole folder dedicated to inspiring screens of RM games, 90% of which were never actually released...
(I actually forgot what this one was called)

Fimbul - This game was looking awesome.

Lazulis(???)Saga and Legion Blade made by the same person.. Something with an "A"

Nigsek Remake(Or continuation?) by Sovan Jedi

Dreams by.. Well I forget who it was.

I think these screenshots inspired me more so then games that were released because of how polished and awesome looking they were.
Call me incendiary, but I've found that I had been inspired a lot by games that did something wrong. Not necessarily bad or terrible, but if I run into a plot point or battle mechanic that made me think, "aww, if only it were like THIS, it could be awesome," then I've felt the urge sometimes to create with some new philosophies or ideas that I might have lacked before.
It's a shame, however, that entire games are not (often) created in a single fit of inspiration, and I find that each of my fits of inspiration demands the dismantling of any work I might have put in prior.

Honesty every time I'm about to give up on this useless hobby I go play Hero's Realm for a few hours. Then I get the courage (or insanity?) to try despite the fact every thing I do sucks.
Usually, I just buy adam saltsman a 24 pack of mtn dew and he will go on for hours about his indie game ventures. It never fails to inspire.
tau posted the "golden age" of rm. it's refreshing to gaze into the past and then be cockblocked by endless VX and XP RTP. what a rude awakening....

Do you ever have anything positive to say?
Ara Fell will live again, friends. Then inspiration will be rich and bottomless like rivers flowing with wine. (charles shaw)
But really, anybody not inspired by Ara Fell is likely too young to remember the golden age of RM gaming

Lazilis Saga and Legion Blade were made by someone called Alicia on GW. I don't think we ever saw anything of it, but...it looked pretty. Funny how the more awesome a game looks, the less of a chance it has of being released.
I also keep a folder of awesome RM screenshots I found lying around. I can't say that they inspire me directly because not always did I do something inspired directly by them. But they're just awesome.
If anyone knows any of those games, please tell!
