I am trying to script a boss battle in RPG maker 2k3, and having some trouble.

For instance if I wanted a boss to use a special ability every 5 turns of the fight without falter. How do I set the number of turns on him to do this. Every combination I tried will not get it done. Further explanation of the turn variables would be very helpful also. (ie x + what does y and z represent)

The built-in turn counter applies to everyone's turns, not just the turns of the enemy. If the boss uses his 5-turn special ability, and then the party member moves once (assuming four party members), then the boss's turn is the fifth turn, and he will use his special ability again.
This is easy. Ok, make a new page in the monster tab and click on the trigger button. Choose "turns elapsed" and make it "5x 5", that means it will be activated on the first "5th turn", and then every 5 turns after that. In it, make it turn on a switch that says something like "boss move X".

Now in your monster tab, give your boss the skill you want and in the "Preconditions" select SWITCH and pick your switch you created, (in this case, "boss move X") and make the Priority 99 AND click the "action turns switch OFF" button and again select your switch. That's it.

In case you don't know what happened, here it is.

On turn 5, the switch is turned on.
When the bosses turn comes up, he will use the skill with the switch condition because it has the highest priority
The skill will turn the switch OFF again, or else that the boss will just spam it.
Rinse repeat.
Is there any good way around this. Lets assume a 4 person party plus a boss. So if I wanted it to be on his 5th turn I should maybe say 25 turns in? Of course that assumes they all get roughly 1 attack per round.

Pretty much. You'll have to predict how many members and what their agility might be at the time of the boss fight and set it accordingly.

Aten is suggesting the BS way.

Easiest way to go about this:

- Make all of the boss's actions turn ON the same temporary switch.

- Make a battle event that activates when the temporary switch is ON. It should add one to a temporary variable, and then turn the temporary switch OFF.

- Make a battle event that activates when the temporary variable is at 5 or more. It should activate a second switch and then set the temporary variable to .

- Give the boss its Special Ability. Make the Special Ability have the highest priority, and make it require that the second switch is ON. Have the Special Ability turn the second switch OFF.

Sure is. Fact is, I only thought of the other "store turns in a variable" way once I already posted that big paragraph. And I wasn't feeling up to making ANOTHER paragraph so I just went with the flow. It's great you posted that method though.
