How do you make a portrait of a character appear above the text box? Here's an example: http://rpgmaker.net/games/1228/images/5635/
Should be a simple show picture command. If you know the dimensions of the screen well you can probably synchronize it correctly. Otherwise you might have to do some coding.
Also another note, that when you do this, probably have it memorize the location via variable, then recall it as it recalls the pictures again.
In theory?
It's relatively simple, actually.
You run an event, and whenever you're doing dialogue, put in. 'Show picture'. When your picture is at the exact coordinates you deem good, run another action in the event to save the coordinates in something like 'face1coord'. Then, whenever you pull an event like that again, all you need to do is 'show picture' and select it from that variable.
I'm not sure exactly but, that's what i would do.

You know what makes putting portraits for characters hard? Trying to find the correct pictures to use in the first place. I downloaded some pics, but they didn't have everything I needed.
What pictures are you looking for? If all else fails do them yourself or find someone who can sprite for you.
You see the two characters I use for my portrait? The artist who made them has yet to make expressions for them.
Do I even need portraits? Will it make my game a lot better if I add them, or is it just a cosmetic choice?
pure preference really. Though they're way better if they have emotions connected to the message box so that you dont have the character faceset smiling while saying "My best friend is dying!!!" People tend to greatly associate human faces to the dialogue if they're near text (like forum avatars).
