LET'S DISCUSS...SUIKODEN!

I think it's no secret that I'm a big fan of the series. I can still remember all those years ago when I saw that hideous boxart in the VG store but the guy at the counter told me to give it a try. I was hooked. Recruiting 108 characters, many of them playable...the in-depth and sometimes heartbreaking story, the power of the runes. It's great.

Suikoden 1 - While it's not the best in the series, it's the one that started it all so it will always hold a special place. The major Rune that causes the game's conflict is the Rune of Life and Death(aka Soul Eater.) I still remember beating the game and thinking Flik and Victor went down with the castle...only to be surprised at the both of them showing up in part 2. Favorite party: Tir, Cleo, Viktor, Eileen(a really good mage, surprisingly), Tengaar, and Luc.

Suikoden 2 - For many, this was the Sukoden game that sealed the deal. Everything good about part 1 was made better in part 2. Multiple rune slots, the in-depth story, the cooking sidequest where the brave announcer would take cheap shots at the judges...and the fact that all 108 characters had personality and depth, something that seems pretty impossible in most games after it(I'm talking about you, Chrono Cross.) The major rune that causes conflict in this game is the Rune of Beginning, split into 2 parts: The Bright Shield and the Black Sword. Favorite party: Riou, Tir, Luc, Mazus, Viktor(or Flik), and some other mage in the final spot. I did have some issues understanding Nanami's plight throughout the game but it made sense to me at the end. It was nice seeing characters returning and growing as people(mainly Apple, who didn't do anything but keep Mathiu's bed warm in the first game.)

Suikoden 3: My personal favorite in the series, more than likely for the characters and and Nadir's Theater. It felt good to the children of characters from the first 2 games, though some of them were WAY more useful than their parents(Emily aka the Boss Destroyer.) Seriously, I remember a dragon boss that I couldn't beat to save my life but someone told me to bring Emily along and she runs up, hits the boss 8 times in one round before he even has a chance to make one move...and he dies. Insane.

...and now we come to Nadir's Theater, which is probably one of the most brilliant minigames/sidequest type thing that I have ever seen in a video game. You could spend hours watching the different combinations of plays. It's a shame that towards the end of this game, Yushitake Murayama, the creator of the Suikoden series, left due to creative differences...which kind of showed, since the next few games in the series didn't feel as connected to previous ones, though he's recently revealed that a "certain company has made an offer to him" that he heavily implies to be Konami. I would LOVE to see him return for Suikoden 6 but it's his heart that has to deal with it.

That brings us to the next game in the series...Suikoden 5.

Suikoden 5 - While it was different than the others, it was quite enjoyable. I really liked this one. It was interesting to see a monarchy where women inherited the right of accension instead of the men. I really, REALLY liked Queen Arshtat and her characterization. She was a queen and ruled accordingly...but she was also a mother. She didn't rule by imitating the way that a man would rule...at the end of the day, she was still a woman and a mother who loved and doted on her children, despite her title. Suikoden 5 also had it's own version of a gamebreaking character, ala Emily and Juan from Suikoden 3: Zerase. Level her up and everything dies. It was also great to see Jeane playable for the first time, though I'm bored with the mystery surrounding her.

What do you like and remember about the Suikoden series?

WHOA wow wow. two tails? that is a sexy idea...

sorry but suikoden 1 is like, better than 3, 4, or 5.

after suikoden 2, the series pretty much turned to utter garbage. it's a shame, because after you play 2 everything else is pretty sub par.
Well yeah...2 was pretty damn great. A lot of people weren't accepting of the 3d and battle changes of part 3.

...and I don't know if you noticed or not but I left 4 out for a reason. I don't use that game...it does not exist.
I wish Suikoden wasn't so goddamned easy. Once you know what you're doing, you can pretty much turn most of the battles into hilarious jokes. Half the fun is holding back in SV. Also, while I share TFT's enthusiasm for SII, I don't think the series is garbage after that; all of the ones (even SIV, but to a way lesser degree) were good on their own merits.
The only really garbage Suikoden was 4. I really enjoyed 3 but I wish that that damned castle didn't have those retardadly long walkways! 2 is my favorite, and I have yet to finish 5, starting it two times, but, getting halfway and quitting. That stupid long battle intro transition effect might have a thing or two to do with it... :\

I am a huge Suikoden II enthusiast.

I recently played Suikoden Tierkreis and ... well. I thought it was p bad.
I'm a long time fan of the Suikoden series. I own all of them (except the two Gaidens - why won't they release them in English ;.; )

Suikoden was the first I played and it's all thanks to my grandmother that I even met the series to begin with. She borrowed the disc from a friend - unfortunately there was an error when you went to get the fire spears and we couldn't progress further, but I kept an eye out for another disc and that's how I found my favourite game - Suikoden II. (I did eventually get a working disc of Suikoden and finish the game. <3 the broken cup game ^.^)

Suikoden II - the story, the characters, the gameplay, the minigames, the art, the MUSIC! - it was everything I was looking for in a game but hadn't realised until I'd played it. God, I love this game. I always liked me some Killey and Georg/Pesmerga, even if they aren't the best fighters. And Fliktor, Oulan, Hannah, Ayla, Clive, Luc... um, pretty much everyone.<3

Suikoden III - when I first played this game I thought it was weird (battles and I'm not a huge fan of 3D-ism) and wasn't overly impressed. I've since rescinded that opinion and find it a rather enjoyable play. I love (most of) the characters and the story. And getting to play as the bad guys is a great device too.

Suikoden IV. What can I say about it? I really don't like it as a Suikoden game. There's a lot that's broken about it - especially gameplay wise. Some of the characters are great, whilst others are really, really annoying (yes Snowe, I am talking about you). I love the minigames. I also liked the story itself, I just wish it had been presented better. The main character walked like a chicken which makes him really hard to take seriously at times. Maybe that was just me though. ^.^; (One thing I will say about IV, though, is that it has really pretty background effects during battles. I remember fighting on a beach and thinking "wow, that background is really pretty. The waves and the beach and wow, butterflies <3")

Suikoden V - I really like this game mainly because I think it feels like Suikoden II. Again, I'm not a fan of 3d, but the story and characters (even the annoying ones) make up for that fact. Though the loading times, camera angles, difficulty and slow starting introduction could be improved apon, it's still a pretty solid game. And I get to play as Killey and Georg again. <3 Plus the base is cool too. And the story makes me cry Every. Damn. Time.

Suikoden Tactics was alright. It continued a few years before/after Suikoden IV and had return characters from it. The battles were pretty cool, though I found myself getting bored after a while, having to repeat certain quests for potch or to kill time.

Suikoden Teirkreis. Oh god. Now, I don't mind this game, really. If it went under a different title I'd have no problem with it, but the fact that it is labelled as a Suikoden game but is not set in the same world as the rest of the games really gets my goat. I like the game, or I want to like the game. The story is alright, the characters are okay, but it's not really... Suikoden. Even IV was more of a Suiko game than this one - at least it was set in the Suiko world. Still, as a stand alone RPG I like it. Just, not as a Suikoden game.
I love the Suikoden series. There is just something so awesome about having your own castle and army. Its really that concept that carries the entire series. The RPG part of the series really is its weakest link. Battles are numerous and easy and therefore pointless. Dungeon design is incredibly simplistic. Some recruitment requirements are unintuitive to say the least. These issues would crush my enjoyment of any other game, yet I still hold Suikoden in high regard.

Also, my FAVORITE part of these forums is when people throw down a dissenting opinion and then proceed to not provide any information about why it is they feel this way. Its like the Hit and Run arguments in England from Family Guy.
Killey and Georg/Pesmerga

Killey is probably flat out the best character in the game. You don't know FIVE DIGIT DAMAGE until you know Killey.

Pes and Georg aren't slouches either, though.
II is brilliant. I've always wanted to play III but never could bring myself to chip the playstation 2
Tierkreis was really, really...really boring

IV was actually the first one i played, the black sheep in the family. I didn't mind it all that much but i didn't complete it and never went back to it.
I never knew Killey was good. Was he the Juan/Emily of Suikoden II?
Never played the first one.

II was the first I played, and I enjoyed the living hell out of it, although with each time I played it I was always a step closer to getting all 108 Stars, I could never figure out the last last 15ish. >_>;

I played III, but I fell asleep due to the boringness of the game, maybe I wasn't ready to play it just yet. :S

I played IV as well, a lot of people really didn't like this game. I got mixed feelings for it, it wasn't bad game or anything, but it seemed a little short for me.

Never played V, but seen a lot of vids for it. Looks pretty badass.

Whenever I see Suikoden now, I see Legion Saga/Exit Fate, ha ha. :P

Am I the only one that found the voice acting of Tierkreis awful? It sounded like the main character was high on caffeine for the first half of the game. Plus the story is so mediocre it hurts.

No, I was about to post this before I saw your post. Thestorywasokayformebutthedialoguekilledit. The Japanese counterpart is much more bearable I heard because it didn't have the voice compressed and sped up to fit into the text speed apparently (unlike the English versions).

Could I BE any more Chandler Bing from Friends (TM)?

Youneverknowuntilyoutry.

god I hated the main character so much
Suikoden is a pretty shitty series as a whole. The tropes are so fucking tired.

They haven't been able to recapture the magic of the first game. Four came pretty close though.
The only thing four managed to recapture was shit.
What are you guys talking about? 4 was awesome. It had some of the best costume designs I've seen.
