Oh, how I love the internet and the "I'm right and that's that" confidence it gives to people that otherwise would know nothing of the word.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

The series was never ruined, at least not by SquareEnix.

If anything, the problem with the Final Fantasy games is that people fanboys idiots expect so much from them that they end up being dissapointed when they're "only" 8/10 games. These are the same kind of people who think the Zelda series has been ruined, even though the games are still top-of-their-genre titles.

To be fair though, I never expected that much from FFXIII. It still failed. It wasn't even, passably fun. I respect each and everyone one of the FFs on their own merit and I really only expect them to bring something to the table that I can enjoy in its own way.

The latest installment had one of that.
If I'm going to be honest, I don't think there's anything particularly "wrong" with the series. Granted, I haven't played any of the games prior to part IV, I didn't really enjoy parts V and XII, and I haven't played XIII, but I do think the games (that I played) were excellent, top-of-the-line stuff. The games have generally remained relevantly consistent quality-wise. I may not have agreed with all of their stylistic choices, but I wouldn't call any of them "bad" games. The two that I didn't like weren't bad, they just weren't my type of games.

However, my tastes have changed and I'm drown to games that are a little less conventional and more abstract (thanks a lot MegaTen). Final Fantasy doesn't really give me what I want anymore, but that doesn't have much to do with the games themselves. It's just that my interests have changed.

That said, parts IV, VII and VIII especially are among my favo RPGs ever.

i dont get it

Forget about it. I was going somewhere that this thread was not about...internet, social retardation, etc...wrong place, wrong topic.

Back to discussing where FF fell off. :)
The whole L'cie, Fal'cie thing...made no sense to me. If the words god/demigod/chosen/slave exists...why the need for fanciness? To make the same sound more grandiose and exotic than it is?

The Megaten games were going to be my next topic, if someone doesn't beat me to it. I get tired of seeing the same old topics...there is life here. I know it. I'll drag it out kicking and screaming, if need be.

Because it sounds cooler?

New rule: Kindredz isn't allowed to use adjectives for the rest of his life, except for articles. Let's see how he likes his boring, ugly world. >=|

Sadness. Though, the rule should be that I'm not allowed to *make up* adjectives...since that's what they did. It just didn't seem to make sense, to me, to make up words for terms that were already in use by the characters...but I digress on that.

FF12. Total garbage.

THE BATTLE SYSTEM MADE IS SUXORZ WHY'D THEY CHANGE IT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

...meaning I believe FF12 killed the series for a biased reason.

FF13 was a step back in the right direction, but it's linearity and EVERYTHING ELSE made it one of the worst in the series. The battle system and the music were the only salvageable things.

Also FF8 was great. It's a great game. Deal with it.

FF8 was alright. There were a lot of things I didn't dig about the narrative, and I didn't like the way they handled the characters, but to each their own.

L'cie is a noun. I just wanted to make Kindredz' life boring by removing adjectives from his vocabulary; he would have a lexicon without flair, shall we say.

FF12. Total garbage.
See, I think FF12 is a fun game with lots to do, a decent story enhanced by the game's permeating pretentiousness and great graphics.
I loved Final Fantasy XII. It was just a great adventure, gambit system was awesome if used properly, graphics were great. Story had it's moments, just wish they didn't change the direction they were originally going for like a quarter way through the game.

Balthier was awesome though, one of my favorite Final Fantasy characters.

As for the topic.. It varies really, some are good, some aren't.

1 is OK,
2 the same, haven't played 3 yet
IV was awesome
V was OK
VI is awesome
VII awesome
VIII is.. Well I'm trying to re-evaluate this game by playing it again,
IX is great
X has great gameplay and graphics, bad everything else.
Fuck XI
Love XII
Still can't commit more then a few hours for XIII though, bought it day one and seriously regret the money spent, especially since it's price went down considerably after launch over here(New Zealand) I think it's only like $50 now from the initial $130 I payed for it.

Any of the spin offs though I haven't particularly liked, except Tactics I guess.
IV still my favorite (burnt into my soul as a preteen)

The series peaked at VI and was going downhill at VIII

ff7 clearly ruined the series.

it had to be said.
Haha, Final Fantasy is not ruined. Final Fantasy has remained as a well known series and the next official release will still sell shit loads of copies.

Each instalment in the series (especially the latter half) has more or less re-invented itself. Maybe that is not the correct word to use but you cannot deny they start back at square one changing the battles, story, interface and exploration. I've always felt that, although Final Fantasy is a series, they are all still separate from each other so to say that a particular game has ruined an entire series or that it is unsalvageable is ridiculous, especially if you try to factor in spin-offs and MMO's which are aimed at different audiences.
