So what is everyone's take on the concept of timetravel as a plot device and gameplay gimmick?
Even though it has been copyied and abused left right and center, It still is a brillent concept all the same. This does bring up it's own set of problems which proberly deals with the idea of continuity and the worst case screniro consisting of idotic plot holes and utter confusion! So what would be the best way to implement this into story and gameplay whilst not completly turning it into a incoherent mess. The best example that I could think of is chrono trigger a game that was way ahead of it's time.
What problems would this bring up in game design?
time paradoxes and the exploitation of time travel are almost NEVER handled well. Wayyyyy too many ways to f up.

Only Austin Powers handled it well - with humour.
Time Travel always touches a soft spot for me :>
Unless done badly.
I wonder if flashbacks would count in this category as well. In the prince of perisa they pretty much replaced checkpoints with a rewind button
I'm trying to play with the idea of time travel (back and forth) on my BQ5 level. I'm going for something very risky... if you think of all the possibilities you open with the idea of changing the past and affecting the future, it's pretty crazy. There's always a lot of holes you leave behind. But I also find it to be a fun concept.
I'd prefer if you handle time travel the same way as say Chrono Trigger and Majora's Mask, lighthearted and not making to big of a deal out of the implication of time travel. Both games present a problem in the future and then you need to solve the problem by among other things travel trough time.

Singularity is the most recent example I can think of. That game got overlooked by almost everyone, and it's actually a pretty good game. The concept is interesting and executed pretty well. One of the endings had some problems regarding the storyline, but you might not run into it depending on the choice you make. I dunno, I thought it was a great game with good mechanics. It's very similar to BioShock and Half-Life in terms of progression and gameplay. I would check it out.
It's only been done a few times in professional RPG's, so it wouldn't be much of a cliche. If you're considering it, I say go for it, on the one exception it's not a Chrono Trigger remake or fan base of any sort.

How about end your life

I'm curious about how people are gonna deal with it in BQ5. The theme idea was mine (I rulz), but I didn't even think it could work because making a game about time travel is not like making a game about zombies, where you can just make a generic puzzle with zombies dancing in the background.

There are MANY ways to deal with it, though. In CT, you go back or forth in time hundreds of years, and you can change major (in a few cases, minor) events and watch how they affect the future. There are many other ways to play with time travel though. How about having you meet yourself in the future, or past? How about traveling just a few minutes back or forth? How about duplicating yourself like that? How about having minor changes in the present result in major changes in the future (butterfly effect)? How about being stuck in a time loop and having to find a way out of it (Groundhog Day)?
I agree, like the amount of puzzles you can make out of this simple yet complex idea is mind blowing. You can build a whole game out of time loop puzzles e.g something like Portal. Sure it could get repetitive after a while, but if it make small/big consquences for every action you make then could make a excellent game :)

Fantastic game that deals with time travel. Check last post for fixed download link.
I just posted a review for it, it's pending. People interested in this topic should check the game to see the way it deals with time travel.

What Kenton except minus Austin Powers being particularly good.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If you spend too much time detailing the minor effects of time travel and trying to cover all the possible paradoxes, it will, ironically, just draw attention to the one or two minor things you forgot. Because the fact that you're focusing on it will cause the player to focus on it, and they'll pay far more attention to paradoxical implications than they otherwise would have.

Case in point, name an unresolved paradox in Back to the Future. Now name an unresolved paradox in Lost. Most people can do the second one a lot more readily. It's not that they can't come up with plot holes in Back to the Future if prompted, but they've just never thought about it. Whereas if they watched Lost, they've probably already spent hours and hours and hours thinking about it.

And yeah, making a time travel game without time-travel-based puzzles is silly. The entire concept of time travel is inherently linked to puzzles, even in movies and books. Go crazy with them.
By the way...

So why did you choose this theme for BQ5? :O
