THREE QUESTIONS ABOUT RPG MAKER 2000/3
Posts
well that and I've invested over 5 years of my time into a rm2k3 game, I'm not going to drop it and restart from scratch on xp or vx because Craze said so. It'd be a waste of my time to start over on a better maker.

If Cherry and Aten ever teamed up to make their own RPG Maker it would tear the world as we know it asunder.
They're only white-hat program crackers in a sense. I'd honestly would be surprised if either of them could push out a nicely-engineered piece of software in a reasonable amount of time.

Yes, but the OP sounds like they're starting anew. I'd strongly suggest not using rm2kX for the same reason writing your game for DOS would be a bad idea.

... well that was kind of nasty.
There's nothing wrong/demeaning with being a white-hat cracker, I was just pointing out the difference between modders and people who actually build things. The post I was responding to sounded a little too fan rabid so I had to dispense some balance out there.
And even only a very rare few are masters in cracking and hacking at the same time. Don't forget that when someone is modding your software (mostly to just fix things) time after time again to such a insane extent, you were doing something wrong in the beginning or lacked enough foresight.
In a reverse defense, It's evident that Emptybrain couldn't do this either >.< At least both those people aren't charging you 60 bucks for theirshovelware and their stuff is actually useful in comparison.

Well, I am not only a white-hat cracker. (nice word, I have to remember it!)
I started creating a game engine years ago, but I had far too few skills.
Now I think, I would be able to do something like that, but it wouldn't be so exciting for me as creating RM2k(3) extensions at the moment :)
For more info, see here: http://cherrytree.at/faq
Look at RM2k9U: That's far more than a modification, like BetterAEP, etc. - it IS actually a "nicely-engineered piece of software", with a total of over 11,000 lines of code at the moment.
And I also created other softwares, like FakeRes, the Windows 7 Starter Wallpaper Changer, several games, etc.
And you are right: I always wondered, why Enterbrain wasn't a bit smarter. Many of those things I did would have been done in 5 minutes (with access to the source code, of course)...

That's not very many lines for a program actually. I'm not downplaying you or anything, but my engine is barely over 20,000k and it's pretty tiny.

Well, if most of the people here actually bought VX/XP, I think it's because they can get away with it and still make some profit.

Why are you carving up an artifact of the last decade instead of creating scripts and tools for XP/VX?

I know what you mean; I just wanted to point out it's more than some lines of assembly hacked into some executable, like other patches of mine.

Dunno: I played around with RGSS some years ago, but I just find it more interesting and challenging to modify RM2k(3) ^^
The idea of being fan-rabid amuses me *foams at mouth*
More lines doesn't mean better code, it just means more code. RM2k9 does look pretty impressive. While 2k3 is definitely... antiquated, it has by and far the most resources of any RPG Maker, so I can see why 2k3 (or a user-friendly 2k9) could be appealing to the typical potential future game maker.

I think what Wolf was going for was the complexity of code brought on by a consequently large amount of code, not the quality of said code.

Correct,
and actually, the more complexity you have gives the capability for the program to be more robust, stronger, and better. This is the year 2010, and our program binaries are dwarfed by content so code size is no longer a factor. Code size is also not responsible for slower programs.

Except for that one fatal flaw, which may lead to it not even working anymore and we'd have to emulate it (sort of like DosBOX). It's already a bad multimedia platform it's built on in the core. What we need is someone to re-write RPG_RT.exe
aw eff it, do you know the only barrier keeping me from doing it myself is the format of Maps, Database and saves? Otherwise I'd totally write it since I've already implemented a working RPG fetch/decode/execute system.
There's so many things about 2k3 that I like, but admittedly you can only hack it into place so much. It's probably just nostalgia. It made me very sad when I spent an hour in VX and realized how many of those hacks had been implemented and how much time I spent on 2k3.
If only we could get Craze's opinion on this issue...

so where does this leave people in the middle of long term projects in 2k3? I've been working on my game off and on since it came out and I hate to think that it's all been a waste of time and that it's just going to vanish into thin air
what are the odds that someone develops a work around? Is it a sure fire thing that it's going to quit working with the next round of OS upgrades or whatever? This has actually been something I've wondered myself before

doesn't matter for me, I will finish this game in rm2k3 regardless of what happens and release it. There will be some people out there who will enjoy it regardless of what maker it was made on. So I'm not worried. My main goal is to finally complete it. Porting it to VX or XP is almost guaranteed in me starting over and 100% guaranteed to never have it completed in my life time. I'll lose heart and quit.
