BADLUCK'S MUSIC TOPIC

Hi guys! I don't post here often, but I WILL be maintaining this particular topic...

Recently, I decided to try and better my composition skills so that one day, I'll be good enough to compose Ara Fell: First Light (AFXP)'s soundtrack myself. I know it'll take several months of practice, but I think I can do it... So I'll be posting my progress here!

I'd love feedback, criticism, encouragement or just general conversation about this sort of thing.

So anyway, here's my first song! It took me about 4 hours to make with Fruity Loops. The music is FL standard midi with a few effects thrown in. It was my first song in about 8 years... It's not finished and since it was composed with the demo version of FL, I can't save it as a project file... it was only exported as an MP3.

There are definitely some problems with it... I have a habit of writing really repetitive songs, so I tried to rememdy that with this a bit. I've been told it sounds Day 1: 2/28/08 like an old school space shooter or something.

Anyway, here it is!

EDIT: I made this everything I've done so far...

It sounded fairly good to me. Better than anything i could compse. ;D
It does sound a bit like an old space-shooter. It's pretty decent, though it feels as if it would be waaay better if it was an instrumental sort of thing than MIDI.

But all in all, not bad!
Yeah, it'll definitely be better when it's not midi. I'm still working hard on the basics right now. I'll be working on that sort of thing when I get more comfortable with all this.
Nice song! This is offtopic, but do you still have that tiered list of RM games handy, BL?
Ahh... maybe. I'll have to check the old webspace I had with RMN. It may also be in the topic for it on GW somewhere.

Anyway, here's my next song!

As the name implies, it was an attempt to write something like a pop song or soft rock or something... It uses my absolute favorite chord progression.

After a little advice from Mala, I changed it a bit... And it came out okay. I need to work on my melodies more... Anyway, here it is!
Poptest sounds great. It has a nice rythem to it.
Here's my latest! I wanted to try working the bass a little bit, and it started to come out really jazzy... The bass may actually be kind of silly, but it was my first try focusing on it. But I really love how the piano turned out. Anyway, leave your comments!

So far they sound pretty good, I don't really know much about this type of stuff like Mala to give some proper feedback haha sorry man. Glad your working on Ara Fell though, it's looking great so far. ;D
Well, I've tried another one... It's my least favorite so far, but I tried working with different parts of the music. Mala suggested doing something like Part A, Part B, Part A, Part B, but for some reason, I'm having trouble with it. This song doesn't do that, but at least it changes some as you go. It's not finished yet, but I don't know if I'll try to finish it any time soon.

Mala also told me that it gets harder as you go, not easier. As you improve, it takes longer and longer to write a song... I'm beginning to believe him...
And now another! This one wasn't too challenging to me from an actual composing perspective, since I've played on this scale with these chords a lot.

This particular song is styled after a song I remember from Duke Nukem 3D. It probably doesn't sound anything like it, but that's how I remember it in my head.

I tried really hard to have an A part and a B part... I probably should have repeated the B part once more, but I didn't really like it. Maybe I should have just kept the chords the same and changed the melody instead?

Anyway, here it is. For the most part, I'm pretty happy with it. I definitely like the drums a lot (though the quick drum solo probably comes to early.)

Tell me what you think!
