THE PUBLIC SHOULD VOTE FOR THE NEXT FEATURED GAME

<kitty_purry> You must all be pretty sick of these blogs by now but I just wanted to make that joke! Also Space Funeral has been picked as one of the 20 Best Games Of 2010 by Paste Magazine

haha, like, you really need to sit down and kind of gasp at how rmn staffers treat their members games. it's like everyone else on the internet but 2 random rmn staffers "get" that this game is pretty neat and creative. fyi dudes, having cool games that people overall enjoy on the mainpage generates new users to come here and possibly hang out.

i just find it weird that space funeral was posted here first and then after all this exposure it is still not featured game. real good way to reward successful games here.

I know, right? At this point I have absolutely no clue what the criteria for being featured is, cause apparently being insanely popular (and creative) for a 2k3 game doesn't cut it or something.

EDIT: Also what is all this crap about "We can't feature it cause its x months old"? Legendary Legend is 2 years old fyi
Idk I guess people feel threatened by good games

Legendary Legend is the first featured game that has created some discussion and poo-flinging.

What where have you been
Pretty sure Fable of Heroes did also

I also disagree with voting.
I don't think the decision should be up to community vote, but the members should still be allowed to voice their opinions! Not that we ever discouraged it before. If there's a game that someone thinks should be featured, they should come out and say so. Then the staff can check it out and make a decision based on that. We don't feature things randomly; we use ones that have received good recommendations.

At this point, it's looking like we could use a greater number and/or wider variety of such recommendations.

I vote for Corfaisus' games.
Space Funeral
Hello Panda
Wooby RPG: Legend of the Woob Blocks
Antiarctica
The Astonishing Captain Skull
Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer
Eyes Without a Face
El Dorado

All either good games or games that offer something new that have been passed up for Fable of Heroes and Legendary Legend.

I don't really see why the public shouldn't vote. Calunio already gave 3 good reasons:

Calunio
- People wouldn't complain (as much) afterwards;
- It would motivate people to play more games, so they could pick one;
- The discussion would make people give more attention to the featured game;
I'd be all for this democracy of the role-assuming pastime in electronic format.

Then if a game is featured, I would know it was because people voted (or meatstuffed the ballot) for it and it would be worth at least taking a look.

Otherwise I usually ignore the featured games for this reason unless they have an eye-catching flame-bait line like "Writing can make up for gameplay" in the description. But if it wasn't for that game we probably would be here talking about all this would we? If you're not going to let the community vote on a game you should be careful about having anything "charged" written in the front page description or you're going to get flame warz.
Sorry guys, the Featured Game is not a popularity contest.

But I always want to hear suggestions and reasons why certain games should be featured. (In fact, I've approached some of you already about this via PM, not to mention my secret army of underlings). So, please PM me with your suggestions and reasons why you suggested them. I appreciate it!

As the democracy of it all, you already have a good set of tools to work with - write reviews. New reviews are on the frontpage. I also post "wavemakers" and "hidden gems" in my SNEWS articles, which gets pinned to the frontpage. I can also pin games to the Latest News section, and I try to post interesting and happenin' things there from time to time (so PM me if you think something needs to be pinned).

On that note, ankylo is looking at rigging up a way to track site stats on a weekly basis, and we hope to rejig the frontpage to have a "Popular" section, where games/reviews/articles from the past day/week/month (or something) that have the most downloads/pageviews/comments would get automatically shown. (Obviously we are still working on the details - please be patient).

I am here to listen.

On that note, yes halibabica, I have re-suggested that Space Funeral be featured next month.

The game has received indie acclaim and has even been featured among the best games of the year including Mass Effect 2 and Kirby's Epic Yarn. Why pray tell is it just a possibility
Yeah, at this point it would be retarded to not feature it.

Misunderstand you featured game function the.

Unless things have changed since I was staff, the point of featured game is to draw attention to a worthy-but-overlooked title. If Space Funeral is so acclaimed, then it obviously is not overlooked.

I don't think we should have to "reward" games for succeeding...succeeding is obviously its own reward. Then again, I think there should have been an article or something about Space Funeral making the big time. But rewarding popular games for being popular is not the function of Featured. We're not trying to lump all the riches into one pile.

Anyway, the cons of voting for featured game are:

* The most popular game, not the best game, will be chosen. (Duh.)
* All the inherent downsides of voting on anything. (See: Misaos.)
* Featured will no longer be drawing attention to a game that needs the attention. If a game is already popular enough to win, it doesn't NEED to be featured.

That said, I am not happy with the current method of selecting the featured game (or the current people responsible for the selection). That anyone who released a game this month or this year should be losing a feature to Legendary Legends seems incredibly unfair. I think that if they're not already, the criteria for featured game need to be fixed (made static) and made transparent (public) on this site, where everyone can see them. Sometimes I feel like they change with each subsequent game that is featured, which is bullshit.

boy are you going to be disappointed...

Anyway, I see 3 camps forming on this issue:

1) the featured game should be a game that others can aspire to/shining example of RMN/novelty
2) the featured game should bring attention to a good but overlooked game
3) who the fuck cares?

the reality is, the criteria that people use to judge whether a game satisfies any of these requirements is different from person to person.

On the subject of LL, it met my criteria, which is simply "some people really enjoyed it." That is also my criteria for suggesting Space Funeral. I know that isn't very technical, or stringent or whatever, but it's what I do. /transparency

Yeah, sorry if this comes as a shock, but we have no definite criteria for featured games at all. It usually falls to the staff reviewers to try the game and give us a yea or nay. For example, Space Funeral was shot down for having very poor gameplay (not that I know; I haven't tried it myself, nor was the one to say so). Meanwhile, Legendary Legend, as the 4-star staff reviews suggest, was appreciated enough that they recommended it.

It's all very informal and considerably limited in its scope. Hence why more opinions on the matter would really help!

That's the attitude that scares me the most.

I agree with Max:

I don't think it's asking a lot.

The problem here is that most people who want to vote for Featured Games don't give half a rat's ass about under-appreciated games. They want to see popular games like AAG and Space Funeral up there. This very topic signifies it.

If Featured Games is to keep its current "get the under-appreciated games more publicity" philosophy, then a democratic vote is not the answer.

I agree. I always thought games were featured because they were very high quality and received lots of praise, not just... Whatever? I mean if there are absolutely no requirements besides being average at best, then a featured game pretty much means nothing.

I don't think it's ridiculous to want the featured game to be something of high quality in nearly every aspect.

I also don't see the problem with what I suggested before: The staff picks 3-5 games that they thought were the best of that month and then the community votes on what should be featured. Everyone is involved that way.

I don't think you realize what a painful process this can be. Sometimes, it's like pulling teeth just to find ONE game that might be good enough. Finding three to five every single month would be a nightmare.

I really don't think a straight-up vote would do it. Yes, the featured games should be of certain quality. No, we don't have any definite criteria on what constitutes that. What we need are more perspectives involved, because at the moment we're pretty much limited to two (guess who).

I remember a time when Brickroad was a staff reviewer, and they needed me to offset his opinions on some of the features (read: Quintessence). Too bad it's hard to find more people willing to do that sort of thing!
Want to get involved with the process?

Send me a PM with your suggestion(s) and the reasoning behind them

This has always been an option, but no one has yet taken me up on it.

I don't care about mediocre, underlooked games when I see the front page. I want to see the star that newcomers will go "oh hey, this site might be worth my time" about.
