SO ABOUT THIS WIKILEAKS THING...WHAT DO YOU THINK?

It's not a big deal. The vast majority of people aren't smart enough to do anything with the information that was leaked, so there's really no point.
The vast majority of people don't have to be smart enough if a very intelligent and resourceful minority are.
Thing is; I'm not worried about national security; I think that 'risk' is being overblown by certain worried politicians who are afraid of their secrets being put out into the air. Honestly like it's been stated, if the USA is held to a higher level of accountability I'm all for it.

p.s. if you have basically no idea of what is going on / any of the context it's probably best that you turn back at the door on this occasion
Yeah, this. That's why I even gave everyone link to get your foot in the door if you have no idea what's going on. There's no excuse to post and have no knowledge on the situaion.
Finding an actual link to Wikileaks isn't that hard either come to think about it.

Because they have an 'insurance' file full of sensitive 'mystery data' (namely the names and other personal information) of a bunch of people involved that they're distribute in case anything happens. Also consider that they have more than one backup plan in case anything happens to the site itself. Wikileaks is not just some lemonade stand that any one entity could just 'shut down' by flipping a switch. The internet doesn't work like that, dude.
It doesn't make sense to you because no offense, you just said you don't really know about the news/what's going on as much as you should.
The other reason it would do no good to "shut down" wikileaks is that they are not actually leaking anything, only publishing the leaks themselves. Think of the safety deposit box system a bank has.
e; bring back the gold standard gentlemen
I love what is happening. That Assange guy seems like a douchebag though. But I guess what the site does is sort of important. I love transparency, if regular citizens don't have any privacy left, then why should corporations or government have any?
Where's the wikileaks content though? On the main site it just says that it was archived and torrented. But there's no links to anything. I visited the site a couple of months ago before it got all hunted down and there was a fair amount of stuff. I think there was even something in the Finland category. Not that it probably was anything I'd be interested in reading first-hand.
I hope it doesn't turn to shit though and that the people who care fight the good fight until the very end.

I may not focus on the news as much as others may or even as much as I should, but if this Wikileaks site is so dangerous to the security of the US government and those serving in our military, why hasn't the government moved in and shut them down? It just doesn't make sense, so obviously they aren't a threat.
I've actually only followed what Fox News has said, and even then I don't watch them every night. Essentially all I've heard is "Wikileaks is seeking to destroy national security under the guise of transparency. 750,000 documents are scheduled to be released this weekend, while roughly 1,500,000 have already been released. This has a high potential to lead to the killing of thousands of US troops serving in Iraq. More conservative republican based bias directed news broadcasting after this quick commercial break."
You can take from that as you will.
USA doesn't want such documents public.
It makes the country look fucking disgusting, which it is.
Does anybody see more 'homegrown terrorism' in the near future?
Does anybody deny the criminal element, even in nations?

Sometimes, it's in the nation's best interest if things are declassified after a period of time.
Sometimes, an information leak can reveal a vital weakness in how a government operates and responds to crisis. It then becomes very valuable intel for those who try to take advantage of it.
Now, I'm not for government secrecy entirely. We have a right to know what's going on... when it's in our best interest to know.

I saw a colbert report episode on the guy who made the initial leaks about certain American activities, and he believes that there was nothing in them that destroyed America. The documents basically said we went into Vietnam on dumbass reasons (kinda like how the Iraq war started in 2001) and that we lost the war by mismanaging our troops and killing innocents and what-not. Big whoop, people knew this for a long time, but now have a real reason to believe they were right.
America ain't perfect. If there is a single document that can destroy America bring it on, until then I'm just going to sit at hope making video games and drink my soda as I enjoy this Christmas break from college. America ain't that weak, and I'm confident that if the government wanted to hide something they'd do a highly secure and exceptional job at doing so: Barack's birth certificate, for example.

there is nothing in them that destroys america because america's history of imperialism destroys its own reputation. there has not been one president since fdr that has not engaged in military actions on foreign soil.
Interesting how many conspiracy theorists we have in here. I guess we should be thankful that the up and coming generation will save us with their clairvoyance and wisdom.

author=KindredzIt's not about the vast majority of people. It's about the vast majority's inability to prevent the dangerous minority from finding out about it. That's why we keep secrets.

If it were real why is it not on wiki leaks? Or is it that it's impossible to find? WikiLeaks can prove things y'know, not harm them. If Wikileaks proved Obama's nation of birth, then it'd just increase his support and convert many people (including some republicans who ain't so stubborn). Likewise it could harm his reputation if otherwise.
Why believe in a falseness? What if there was a truth? This is the goal of WikiLeaks. Support it.
