SOMEBODY TALK ME INTO/OUT OF THIS
Posts
My games do not dare use rips. I do all my own art and I'm a computer scientist not a graphic designer. I'm sorry if I talk of effort, but I at least show for it with my submission history. I've got many games not released here yet because they are old and not usually complete.

Exit Fate
Balmung Cycle
Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis
Legend of the Philosophers Stone
Final Fantasy: Endless Nova (oldie but goodie)
A Blurred Line (wasn't finished entirely, but the mark it left speaks for itself)
Legion Saga
Kindred Saga
Phantom's Legacy
You forgot about Everlong.
Where was that one game that was just color toning of like refmap or something yet it looks very visually striking? It had the metal blue and copper orange forest canopy and everything.
Dammit, Jim!

author=StrangeluvI was waiting for that to show up here. Those were among the first custom graphics I ever did, of course they're going to be crappy!

EDIT: As for the creating custom graphics, it's better to start as soon as you can, so you can summarily scrap the first half dozen you make.
How does this relate to Kongregate games?Relevant because the game was a hit success whilst using something we all know (and use a lot), REFMAP in this case.
Granted the numbers aren't a lot (I've not seen another case of REFMAP usage), but that's not the point.

Don't quote me out of context. To clarify I meant what I said as it pertains to Kongreate. I was just saying how my thoughts may tie into Kongregate games, rather than the ones here. The question wasn't directed to you or anyone.
Anyways, I'm done discussing in this topic. :/ I just want my Christmas back. <heads to rock in ground>
I thought you were talking about how games that used non-custom graphics almost never saw large successes.
Pokemon was a game first, no? Most people just think of the anime and associates everything childish from the anime to the game. The concept of the game is actually very cool. With good graphics and a more mature storyline it would have reached a lot more people. Plus, at the time it was revolutionary. It's easy to forget what times were like back then. So there is nothing wrong with making pokemon games. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean you should try and talk people out of making them.
As far as custom graphics, just start doing it. If you enjoy it then keep going, but if you get "bored" or if frustration makes you want to quit, then quit. If you never try then you'll never know, nobody else can determine that for you ^.^ Getting an opinion never hurts but don't put too much weight on what others have to say about this. I started doing small edits and found it to be very fun. I never set out to make custom graphics, I had a need in my game for which a graphic didn't exist so I created it. Then I started major edits and even created new items. I never sit down and draw sprites for 2 hours, i work on small bits here and there. I always find a way to make something work, but then again I've always been good at learning from just copying other peoples work. The challenge of it, the feeling of accomplishment afterwards, and the overall feeling that your efforts will make your game better...that's why I do it. Also, some people are just not cut out for that sort of things. That's what teamwork is for. Too many of us try and complete a game on our own when each aspect of a good game requires much practice and knowledge.
This thread got out of hand and isn't very helpful to Hali. It's a good topic to talk about but in the wrong place. It's sad to see people resort to personal attacks to try and "win". *sigh* We can preach about being a strong community but as soon as someone comes in a negative opinion the insults come raining down hard. Discussion is healthy, bickering is not. If you have to make personal attacks to defend your values then you have already lost.
It seems most discussions around here end up getting personal fast(this one isn't so bad), as soon as one person does it the other has to retailiate and it's reduced to an episode of Yo Momma. I guess that's what happens when so many strong personalities are locked in a room and told to play nice.

Dont bother making new graphics for pokemon hunter 4. Either decide on custom graphics at or near the start of the project, or dont bother.
This reminds me... im thinking of making a game that involves pokemon mafia...

what if you were to finish up PH4, then embark upon a new project, potentially combining many of the good elements of the PH games. this'd give you a chance to get a headstart on your custom graphic stuff and planning.
i think i mentioned in my review something in the style of the original pokemon gameboy games would be neat. you could use some of that stuff as a base and edit it to get into the swing of pixel stuff.

Do this. Plan out ahead of time of what you want your game to be so you know what graphics to make too. Don't be afraid of having programmer art as placeholders early on too, you don't need to make the finished graphical product before you can create other content.

and remember that you can always ask for help. us art bros are always willing to help out.
if no one else is willing to help, i got this homie

And if you want some Gameboy-ish sound effects that are custom, you can quickly mix em' up using SFXR.
off topic, but can we be cool like this in all topics from now on?

ass games.
I'd say that custom graphics is something that's completely down to you. It IS a lot of effort, but it has the major advantage that someone will be able to look at screenshots from your games and say "Hey, that's that guy! I loved his last game." It also helps you stand out against the slew of RTP and rip games and it is good practice.
I say go for it and enjoy it. Even if you think you're crap at it, keep going!
And yes Tardis, I agree, this topic has been... Refreshing.

from tardisSee, this is the road I was heading down already. I wanted PH4 to be my last RTP game, as well as my last rm2k game. After it's over (whenever THAT is), I plan to move on to RMVX and start making all my own graphics. I think it's something I can handle; I'm not a stranger to pixel art, just not spectacularly good like, say, Ocean or Nessiah.

But I don't want the game to sit and rot like its previous iterations are, so now the quandary is how to make them more appealing otherwise.

Yeah, right on! That's part of what I wanted to say, you'll never get as good as them if you do not try. It's the least you can do using the RPGMaker. It should invite custom artistry, because its the only other thing it can do!
Sphere didn't have an RTP so I was forced to make my own pixel art, and now the art in Blockman is passable and different than any other game here.
I didn't care if there were spectacular games made with the RTP/rips, It's just that you've got all the time in the world to make a hobby game, and one thing I've learned is that even if you don't complete the game and release it, it's still just a hobby. So why not take time to make it look different.
