They all seem to have a colored box around them. when i use them.

It seems like a transparency issue.
In RMXP and VX you get to choose the transparent color when you import each image, but I don't know which engine you are using...
I'm sure someone has the correct answer for you?

i should have specified. my mistake, I am using RPG maker 2k3
Your problem is that you are putting the graphics inside your project folders directly. Open up Rm2k3, and import them properly using the import / export tool. It doesn't matter if they're already in the project folder, it will work. When you import it, you can set the transparancy color. Simply click the background color, and voila.
Do make sure the background is a color that is not in any of the characters, otherwise those parts will be transparent too.
