MAPPING CONTEST 2K3
Posts
The path is three tiles wide above and below the column in the middle of the tile, and there is clearly a column on either side of it where it bends, meaning it could only be two tiles wide there. Disregarding the column on the path (as it's not even my beef yo), there are still numerous other columns (and statues and wall segments and and and and) littered about the map. Except for the overgrown path, there's no indication whatsoever that these are even ruins!
Now you're just trollin' pally, so I'm just going to say "let's agree to disagree" (which I can say because I'm right) and enjoy some illogical beauty.

Getting worked up over a pillar, I think we need to just enjoy the maps...(I agree with jude).
I wouldn't go near trying to make anything with this tileset, not only because it's awful, but I prefer the contests where there are no limitations and you can create whatever comes to your imagination (like jpc maps). But I think some people have managed to make things look decent. The cropped look of BM's was a great way to include just enough color variation as well as leaving enough imagination for someone to think about what the rest of the map is like, and also probably to hide his disgust for the tileset.
Really, who made this tileset. There are so many things wrong with it.

Originally I was using an edited version of this chipset for my game which featured a dark castle similar to the style of the first map I posted. After I failed to find a good chipset for the competition I went back and found the original and filled the empty space with the stuff I thought was cool from my edited version while trying to keep as much variety in it as possible.
Of course the styles didn't suit each other and that made some tiles unusable but the maps came out better than I expected and I ended up trying things out of my comfort zone which I felt pretty satisfied with. I think I learned more with the limited choice of tiles then I would have if I used a super awesome chipset.

edit: Also I'd be interested to hear what you guys think is good or bad about the chipset and any suggestions you would have on the overall contest.

Ugj, sorry I've not been posting, guys. A little busy lately. >.<
Anyway, I'm definitely liking quite a few of the maps.
Out of Jude, SGCN, and Zeronamous, I'm having a hard time deciding which one I like best. XD

everything you had to say could have fit into a matchbox and was just told me to "use my imagination". Thanks for the tip, up until now I'd just been tracing pictures of trains out of old technical manuals
Unless of course you mean "the path is covered by grass" which I directly addressed, but once again thanks for being so elucidating with your hyper-vague arguments followed up by "you don't get it". I call it the "geodude special".
well thank God the three-tile rule wasn't broken
lol @ geodude vs. Kaempfer
There's some cool maps so far. I went for something very simple, I never really expected to win. I just wanted to participate ^.^
I'll cast my vote after the deadline

Hey, Arcan, I think you used my unedited map for the first page. :P
I added some stuff to it a little while after.
Oh, and how long will voting be open for judging?

I didn't have much time to do this, so I kinda rushed it as I figured it's better late than never.
So, here's my map:

I know it's really plain, but there just wasn't many outdoor objects that really fit well imo. :[
But, it's a large castle city with waterways and canals for easy transportation of goods and such, also doubles as a solid defense.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

NewBlack, your map somehow looks like it has just compressed its middle section in order to go into Figaro Submerge Mode. Or maybe like it's about to slide open at that center divider to reveal an array of cannons and fighter jets.
