SO I BOUGHT A PS3 [RECOMMEND ME SOME GAMES]

So we bought a PS3 yesterday (and by "we", I mean "my wife"). We have an HD TV and were waiting for the latest format war to end (blu-ray vs. hddvd) before buying a player. I read that the PS3 is the best blu-ray player under $500, so we got that.

I managed to find the last 80gb PS3 in the city, too (it's been discontinued), so I have the backwards compatibility for PS1 and PS2.

My wife and I are into Rock Band, so we got that, too. And Singstar Pop. Motorstorm came with the system.

Anywho, recommend me some games!

Also, I never owned a PS1 or a PS2, so the field is wiiiiide open for suggestions.

I really recommend you ask people to recommend a few games with thorough justification and not give you a giant list of games without explaining why each one is good (the latter is how these topics usually turn out). It's not really helpful if people just namedrop. Anyway:

Devil May Cry 4 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma are the best character action-brawlers on the market right now. I cannot recommend one over the other as they are basically the same game. I think I personally prefer Ninja Gaiden a little more. Both are pretty difficult and require a lot of finesse on your part. The action is just as tight as a one-on-one fighting game, though, so there is enormous room for you to succeed through individual skill at the game. I warn you that both games are unbearably cheesy (however DMC4 comes across as more self-aware about it).

Burnout is one of the best-regarded arcade racers out there. I recall that you loved earlier Burnout games so you might as well try the newest one.

Oblivion is way better on PC but really fun on consoles also. If you haven't played it yet, you might as well now. Pretty much everyone in the world loves Oblivion. The expansion is especially awesome (I think it's included on-disc in the Game of the Year edition).

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was one of the biggest surprises I had played last year. Myself and everyone else were convinced that it would be an awful Tomb Raider clone, but the game somehow pulled everything together to offer a game where the platforming, the shooting, the exploration, and the story were all pretty solidly OK. You have played games with better shooting, and games with better platforming, and games with better stories, but you probably haven't played a game that does them all competently enough. The end result is a game that does a whole lot of things, and does them all pretty well, and ends up being a much better game than each of its pieces would suggest. Trivia: The female love interest has small boobs and wide hips. This curiously made her one of prettiest girls in a video game ever. In listening to an interview with the game's director (who was female), I learned that the (male) character designers had originally designed a typical walking vagina with huge boobs et al. She was put off by the design and made it a major goal of the project to make all of their characters as plain and everyday as possible. The result is a staff of the most memorably uninteresting characters I've ever seen in a game.

It is unfortunately true that all of the really popular games on PS3 are also available on 360 and are usually marginally better on it. All of us that went out and bought PS3s are actually waiting for 2009, because that's when we'll finally have a steady stream of excellent Japanese games (did anyone else notice that lack of blockbuster Japanese titles last year?). So uh . . . welcome to the club!
Yes, please everyone follow brandonabley's example. This is an excellent way to present recommendations (I wish I thought of asking that in the first place).

EDIT: You may also remember that I love wide hips, too.

PS2 Game I Recommend
--------------------
Shing Megami Tensie: Persona 3
Not only does this game take up about your entire life. You don't even have to train or anything. It has a relastic sim part to it and the dating system is suprisingly well thought out. You can develop relationship with other character which in turn make your personas stronger. A great game and has really interesting storyline.

PS3 Game I Recommend
---------------
SKATE
This is not your typical skating tony hawk game. This takes away the unrealistic skating tricks of tony hawk games and adds the enginerring and skill it takes to perform a simple trick. The graphics stunning and the whol experience is great makes well use of the axis controller.
I can't say to much about PS3, but here is some PS2 and a PS1 game.

PS1:
Chrono Cross:
I don't know if you are into RPGs or not, but I found Chrono Cross to be excellent. Only thing though is to make sure you played Chrono Trigger first, or I am not sure the story would make sense.

PS2:
Shadow of the Colossus/ICO
Well, my second post in a row about these games. Both are excellent, although I preffered SotC to ICO. ICO is more of a puzzle game, trying to get from point A to point B, and getting your companion there to. SotC is more of an exploration game, with the puzzles coming in the form of huge Colossi. Fighting them can be a great thrill.

Okami
Great Zelda-like game. The graphics are like a piece of art, and it is a fun adventure game.

All I can think of off the top of my head...

Hahahah

Dude, Kentona invented the RPG genre.
Haha, I guess we are on an RPG site.
Why has no one recommended Dragon Quest VIII?

Anywho, I was wondering: did that issue with the Guitar Hero III guitar and Rock Band compatibility ever get resolved? After an extensive and exhaustive 2 and half minute search on Google, wherein I clicked no less than 2 links, the latest news I found was dated December 14th, 2007. In it, they said that Harmonix has a patch, but was blocked by Activision while Activision said that Harmonix is a bunch of dirty liars.

So, any new news on that front? We want a second guitar, and Best Buy, Futureshop, etc.. etc... are all sold out here.

Why has no one recommended Dragon Quest VIII?

I thought you wanted PS3 games only. I had forgotten your long hiatus from Playstation consoles! I'll recommend my favorite three PS2 games with your tastes in mind:

Dragon Quest VIII because it is unequivocally the best video game ever made.

Final Fantasy X and XII because even though the internet hates these games (the law of the internet is that you cannot like a Final Fantasy game less than ten years old; I recall when VII came out and for a long time everyone insisted it was the worst game ever), it's hard to get a better RPG than Final Fantasy. XII is especially interesting because it has some unusual mechanics and a storyline that, in its sparseness, is much easier to enjoy and take seriously than the angst-ridden teen operas than Final Fantasy games usually are.

Xenosaga 3 and not the first two. The first two games are not good. Even WIP likes Xenosaga 3! It is basically a Dragon Quest game set in outer space. The story is full of symbolism that will take you back to 10th grade creative writing, but if you manage to ignore that you'll realize the characters are all very good and the story itself is pretty interesting. Because Xenosaga 1 and 2 are purely expository and the entire series' plot occurs in this game, you really aren't missing anything either.

Shadow Hearts 2 and not 1 or 3. Everyone agrees the other two were not very good. SH2, however, was a total fluke and was accidentally a very good game. It's the only video game that every member of #rm2k enjoyed a lot and did not disagree with. It's not the best game in any particular area, but it's reasonably solid in absolutely every regard. In this sense it reminds me of Drake's Fortune -- it's excellent not because it does anything very well but because it does a lot of things competently.

Of course Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are easy recommendations for an RPG nut, but Xenosaga 3 really is one the best worst-selling jRPGs out there. But seriously seriously do not play the first two first. They are not very good.

Also note that all five of the above games have excellent music!

A Tale of Two Guitar Games: I am fairly certain that the PS3 compatibility issue was never resolved. On 360 the guitars are interchangeable though so HAHAH. I might be wrong, but as of a month or two ago there was no inter-game compatibility for guitars.
In terms of PS2 games, Shadow of the Colossus and Dragon Quest VIII are pretty incredible; so's Final Fantasy XII, I guess, though I haven't gotten very far. Okami is really good too, partly because it's a really good game and also partly because there are no Legend of Zelda games for Sony platforms, and it fills that niche really well. Besides, Okami>Legend of Zelda

Another reccomondation is Odin Sphere, which is sort of flawed in a couple of aspects and isn't always that fun, but is really different from most of the other games out there--and so much effort was put into its presentation that it's really worth trying out.

80gig isn't being discontinued, just holding them off for the Metal Gear Solid 4 release. So anyways your asking for recommendations for any good Playstation game that's been released since.. hope you have the time, and money haha.

Playstation One..

Crash Bandicoot 1 & 3 - These were some pretty cool platformers back in the day, hell Crash even became the mascot for the PSOne haha. The cool thing about these games is you can just enjoy them, and not really care if it's story is shit.

Final Fantasy IX - I still recommended VII or VIII, but I think you would enjoy IX better, plus it's my 2nd favorite game in the series, VII being first because it introduced me to RPGs and I just have great memories of really getting into that game.

Anyways Final Fantasy IX starts of with a young thief named Zidane, who is a part of the group "Tantalus", who's goal is to kidnap the princess of Alexandria, cheesy yes but this game just draws you in with it's creative character designs, beautiful music, fantastic visuals, great story, I just don't see why Square hasn't even tried to milk this brilliant masterpiece yet.. well except the cameos in Final Fantasy Dissidia, PSP Fighting game.

Metal gear Solid - Ive only liked the first in the series, such an awesome game, SO much better then the 2nd in the series. This game has so much action in it, and I remember going through it like 3 times just so i could get the stealth suit and bandana(Unlimited ammo)and the metal Ninja guy was hella cool haha.

Star Ocean The Second Story - Cool little Rpg from Enix, you should try it out, plus there is 2 different scenarios you can go through the game with so that's replay valvue, plus the different things you have to do through out the game to to get certain things and events, characters, etc.

Also others but I can't be bothered describing them.
Tekken Series, Resident Evil 2, Destruction Derby 2, Granturismo 1 & 2, Jonah Lomus Rugby, Spyro, Dino Crisis, etc.

Playstation 2..

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas - This game just fucken rules haha, ok story, great growth system, I loved going to the gym and doing up my stamina and getting huge as, then later on just eating heaps of pizza a burgers and being too fat to run haha.

To be continued..

They massacred the story without the original authors' consent starting at the second half of the second game. For 3 they drastically dumbed down the battle system & character building systems, turning the entire game into an attack command mashing session as opposed to the more tactical combat of the previous two games. Congratulations!

If by "tactical" you mean "house of cards every random battle" then I might be inclined to agree! I don't think the game is dumbed at all but rather it isn't crushed by the burden of tons of needless fluff. It's unfortunate that you didn't like the game.

Also, in my opinion, the butchered version of the story is a lot better than the original story so maybe I'm glad that they went off in a new direction without consulting the writer.
While there were a lot of good games for PS1 and PS2, the only games I can think of off the top of my head that you really need are Legend of Mana and Katamari Damacy. Especially Katamari. Mana is hands down the best thing Squenix ever made, but Katamari is hands down the best thing ever made.
I thought I just read somewhere by someone that Legend of Mana sucks...

Legend of Mana is a mediocre game, at best, with a great soundtrack.
